Not many people can claim to be at the heart of science planning, analysis and archiving for all European Space Agency - ESA planetary missions. Starion's Alfredo is one who can! Based in Madrid, Alfredo is the SPICE Service Lead at ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC). This means he supports operational missions such as Mars Express, ExoMars, BepiColombo, Solar Orbiter, JUICE and Hera. He is also working on missions in development, including Comet-Interceptor, which is scheduled for launch in 2029, and M-MATISSE. Alfredo cites planetry flybys as his working highlight, knowing they are often capturing images of planets or parts of planets never previously seen. Model-based system engineering (MBSE) involves a major shift in the way complex systems are designed, developed and verified. Unlike traditional approaches that rely heavily on documents, MBSE uses models as the primary way of exchanging information and decision-making.? ? Why is this a good idea? Using MBSE enhances efficiency, reduces errors and provides a clearer and more consistent framework across all of the phases of a system's life cycle. ?? Recently, Paloma Maestro Redondo, System Engineer and Project Manager in Starion’s System Engineering team, has been sharing insights into MBSE. These are based on Starion's MBSE team’s extensive experience of supporting organisations to implement MBSE and undertaking projects to advance data exchange between tools. This includes integration with CDP4-COMET, which can act as a modelling hub. ?? Whether you've just started considering MBSE or want answers on a specific aspect of MBSE, check out this overview of the team’s advice and tips, including which industries can benefit and how to make the transition to MBSE.?https://lnkd.in/dbZBdRBF #SystemEngineering #MBSE #EngineeringModels #DataExchange?#CDP4COMET

Starion Italia has started developing a generic AI-based image processing software programme that will improve efficiency and performance. The Versatile Intelligent Processing Enhancement and Refinement chain (VIPER) project, funded by the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI)), will initially focus on use cases in the space domain. However, it will be an adaptable AI application encompassing commonly repeated tasks that can be used with any computer vision systems, significantly speeding up the time required to develop AI solutions. During the first stage of the project, our AI experts will use VIPER to improve the efficiency and performance of existing systems within two use cases, demonstrating the capabilities and potential of this AI chain approach. Both involve the analysis and processing of space-related data: the first will use satellite Earth observation (EO) data to identify illegal landfills, while the second will focus in another direction, using telescope data to identify near-Earth objects (NEOs). Read more about VIPER here: https://lnkd.in/ex2AEBFr ------------------------ Starion Italia ha avviato lo sviluppo di un software generico di elaborazione delle immagini basato sull'intelligenza artificiale che migliorerà l'efficienza e le prestazioni. ? ? ????Starion experts based at the European Space Agency - ESA’s European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) will be undertaking real-time analysis of close-up images of Deimos (one of Mars's two moons) during tomorrow's flyby of the Red Planet, in order to help with calibration of the Hera spacecraft's instruments before it reaches the Didymos binary asteroid system. This is part of a two-stage experiment to learn more about these asteroid systems and explore options to deflect asteroids that may collide with Earth in future. Starion’s Alfredo Escalante Lopez, who is leading the SPICE software operations team at ESAC, says the speed of the flyby and the narrow focus of Hera’s Asteroid Framing Camera (AFC) make it a highly sensitive challenge. Hera will take images of Deimos from around 1,000km and of Mars from around 5,000km. “The AFC's field of view is very narrow – just a few [5.5] degrees – and the flyby will be very fast, so the observation timing needed to be planned extremely carefully,” he explains. Other members of the SPICE team working on Hera include SPICE Service Engineers Ricardo Valles Blanco from Starion and Rafael Andrés Blasco. Read more about tomorrow's planned flyby and the wider mission, and how Starion's experts have been supporting Hera since before launch:?https://lnkd.in/eZj-pz_m #HeraMission #Deimos #MarsFlyby #SpaceExploration

Starion was delighted to join our Vodafone colleagues at MWC Barcelona this week to showcase SAFEPLACE, an innovative crisis response platform being developed within the European Space Agency - ESA Civil Security from Space (CSS) programme. #MWC25 allowed us to promote the project by presenting two essential elements, Starion's 'Crisis Assistant' chatbot and Vodafone's 'Network as a Sensor', to a wide range of international attendees and to Spanish national authorities including His Majesty the King of Spain and the Spanish Government delegation.? ??? ?? Several demonstrations in MWC25 were set up in collaboration with our partners Vodafone and WDNA to show the advantages of combining space and terrestrial services and data for emergency and disaster management. ?? When emergencies or catastrophes happen, SAFEPLACE will deliver a complete assessment to crisis managers through the Crisis Assistant, which is based on a large language model (#LLM). This will allow crisis operators and analysts to find the information they need to support rapid and accurate crisis management through a chatbot-style interface. SAFEPLACE is a 3-year project being led by Starion's teams in Belgium and Spain to develop a new solution that will provide prompt, up-to-date situational awareness information to crisis and disaster management organisations in Europe. There will be four pilot demonstrations, with the first ones happening in May (Belgium) and October (Spain) - more news on that soon! Lead Cybersecurity Architect @ NEXOVA & STARION Group

Yesterday, March 5th, I had the honour of attending the 4th CyberSec2025 Conference at the Carabinieri’s Caserma ‘Salvo D’Acquisto’ in Rome. The event focused on "AI, Post-Quantum Cryptography, Espionage and Geopolitics: The New World of Cybersecurity." On behalf of Starion, I participated in one of the Thematic Tables titled "Strengthening Cyber Resilience of Satellite Networks and Submarine Cables." It was a privilege to engage with distinguished speakers from EU and Italian government institutions, academia and industry, sharing insights on key aspects to enhance the cybersecurity resilience of these critical infrastructures. The main points I brought to the discussion included: ?? Space and terrestrial networks as an integrated ecosystem – Satellites do not replace submarine cables; instead, they must operate in synergy to ensure resilience and continuity. ?? Emerging cyber threats to satellites – CEMA (cyber electro magnetic activity) attacks targeting the RF downlinks and uplinks (e.g. jamming & spoofing), ground segment compromises and risks within the complex supply chain. ?? The need for a structured regulatory framework – The need to adopt frameworks like the Cyber Resilience Act #CRA and the EU Certification Scheme #EUCC as a starting point to provide a solid foundation for a space system cybersecurity certification process that covers all the mission phases. ?? Proactive protection – Investing in cyber-ranges, digital twins and advanced testbeds is key to validating security before launch and strengthening countermeasures against emerging threats. ?? Attack monitoring and response – Establishing space cybersecurity operation centres #CSOC is critical. ?? International collaboration and CTI sharing – Tackling cyber threats requires a global cyber threat intelligence #CTI sharing mechanism, with rapid response models to address incidents effectively and with a coordinated effort between governmental institutions and industry. A big thank you to all the participants and organisers #CyberSecurityItalia for the insightful discussions and contributions to the future of cyber resilience in space and critical communications networks. ?????? #CyberSEC2025Rome #CyberResilience #SpaceCyberSecurity #SatelliteSecurity #AI #Cryptography #Quantum #NationalSecurity #CyberThreats #Cyber4Space??
