How do we build confidence and connection in middle schoolers? Our We Can After-School Program is all about helping middle schoolers grow important life skills through fun, interactive activities. A recent session had students write down 3 interesting things about themselves, then toss their paper into a pile. The twist? Everyone had to guess who wrote each one! Activities like this encourage students to practice communication, confidence, and empathy by connecting in new ways. It’s a perfect reminder that discovering and understanding each other’s unique qualities builds the foundation for strong friendships and self-awareness. Our Making Changes after-school program for high schoolers is off to an amazing start with over 40 students! ?? Returning faces and new ones joined in as we teamed up with SD Nights to bring out the fun! The game truck and bouncy house were a hit, with students battling it out in Madden, MLB The Show, EA FC, and Mario Kart. We're looking forward to an amazing school year ahead!

A huge shoutout to Emiliano, one of our STAR/PAL high school students, for submitting an essay to the Tony Gwynn Community All-Star Program and securing a $5K grant for us from the Padres Foundation! ??? This amazing program honors youth who give back to their community, and we are so proud of Emiliano for what he has already accomplished, what he continues to contribute here at STAR/PAL, and the incredible adult he’s becoming. We are excited to announce we received a grant from SDG&E as part of their initiative to support community partners that provide preventative education, emergency preparedness, and safety programs! This grant will help fund our Youth Safety and Empowerment Program, ensuring that we continue to provide critical on-site support and resources for our community. We’re looking forward to further collaboration with SDG&E, and hope to bring our students to the Wildfire & Climate Resilience Center in the near future! ????
