Ever sat at a red light with no cars around and thought, “Why am I still here?” Or hit a streak of green lights and felt like you hacked the system? Spoiler alert: It’s not luck, and no, flashing your headlights doesn’t make the light change faster… but props to the folks still trying that trick. It’s called Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and our crews at Stansell Electric install and maintain the systems that keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. Here’s how it works: • Many intersections start with predetermined timing cycles based on traffic patterns • Sensors then detect vehicles, either in the pavement (loops) or mounted above (radar, cameras, or thermal imaging) • Traffic cabinets (the metal boxes on corners) process that data and control the signals • City engineers can make live adjustments remotely through connected systems But like anything technical, sensors can malfunction. When that happens, traffic signals might not “see” waiting vehicles, which can cause longer red lights or unusual delays. That’s why expert installation and regular maintenance are so important, and why we take this work seriously. It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week, a time to pause and remember the lives behind the lanes. This year’s theme, “Respect the Zone So We All Get Home,” is more than a message, it’s a reminder that Injury Free in work zones is a shared responsibility. At Stansell Electric, our crews work within feet of live traffic every day installing signals, lighting, and intelligent transportation systems that keep communities moving. We’ve had barrels knocked over, close calls that stay with us, and far too many reminders of how serious work zone safety really is. Since 2000, National Work Zone Awareness Week has brought attention to the dangers faced by roadway workers. And while our teams are trained, equipped, and alert, we still rely on the public to do their part. Most people killed in work zone crashes aren’t workers. They’re drivers and passengers. From the Field to Leadership: Meet Josh Felker Josh started at Stansell Electric in 2005 as a Skilled Laborer. Nearly two decades later, he’s leading our entire ITS field team as General Superintendent, and he’ll be the first to tell you, the journey wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it. His path? ➡️ Skilled Laborer ➡️ IMSA Level 2 Traffic Tech ➡️ Field Leader ➡️ General Superintendent What fueled the climb? “Making Injury Free a priority. Learning everything I could. Building relationships. Growing our people.” Now, Josh leads scheduling, manpower, equipment, and team development across multiple ITS projects, and while he misses being on the tools, nothing beats mentoring the next generation in the field. 💪 🛣️ Proudest project? I-24 Smart Corridor 💡 Advice for others? “Keep at it. Learn from your mistakes. Stay positive and inspire others.” 🍳 Outside of work? You’ll find him hunting, boating, or cooking on the Big Green Egg.
