MIT is the only other university in the top 5 in all five years. Harvard is the only other university to get a first-place ranking, in 2017. Harvard and UC Berkeley made the top 5 in four years out of five. Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, the University of Illinois, Cornell, Northwestern, NYU, and Penn each made the top 5 in one year. Thank you to the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Venture Capital Initiative team for spearheading this research. Note: We identified the year of achieving unicorn status for 1,015 of 1,110 US-based VC-backed unicorns in our sample. We also identified the educational background of 2,698 of 2,975 unicorn founders. The universities are ranked by the number of VC-backed startups that reached unicorn status in each year between 2017 and 2021 and that had at least one founder from that university. #stanford #stanfordgsb #venturecapital #startups #innovation #technology
