We'd like to make an announcement: All 3 issues of REP Magazine are available now! Rep Magazine was created for young people and educators to explore designing with emerging technologies in analog ways. Each issue provides prompts and activities that allow them to wrestle with how their identity and social status shape the tools they put into the world, and how the designs of those tools might impact others. As we’ve shared in the past, technology is power and every person has a fundamental right to share that power. If we are to create a more equitable world, then all of us must be equipped with the knowledge to understand, use, and create right along with the emerging technologies shaping the world. Rep is a resource designed to bridge that gap, aimed at helping young people understand how emerging technologies–voice bots, gene editing, and algorithms (the rules that underlie many emerging technologies)–work. Through activities, reflections, and case studies, young people can discover how to ask better questions, design equitable technologies, and understand their own biases as designers and creators. Each issue focuses on a specific topic. 1?? Build a Bot - This issue is focused on voice bots like Siri, Google Home, or Alexa. Readers learn what bots are and explore their uses, and even uncover why bots understand some voices better than others. Users can also create their own bot lexicons, discover the potential harms of social attachment to bots, and more. 2?? Gene Editing - Readers explore the basics of gene editing; how it works, how it has been used for decades across sectors, its uses for medicine, agriculture, and more. Learn about glowing pet fish that have edited genes. Discover how gene editing impacts—and is impacted by—varying systems (research and development, production and distribution, ecosystems, and regulatory), and experiment using gene editing to create something new and solve problems. 3?? Constella - This specially-formatted issue is a story-based, "choose your own adventure" game about decision-making and problem-solving using algorithms. Players take on the role of a new designer living in the space city "Constella." As they travel to different locations within Constella, they’re asked to make decisions using algorithms that will impact the city's future—often to unanticipated consequences. Developed in partnership with designer Daniel Frumhoff, each issue of Rep is filled with colorful, engaging artwork. The first two issues include an “art remix,” allowing readers to cut out artwork and backgrounds to build their own artistic vision of the future for the emerging technology they focus on. In the coming months we’ll share deeper looks into each issue of Rep, showcasing how they connect to the themes of our emerging tech portfolio. In the meantime, you can purchase copies or download them digitally at: https://repmag.org/get #emergingtech #AI #bots #geneediting #education #technology

Everyone has the capacity to be creative. At the d.school, people use design to develop their creative potential.
关于我们
The d.school is a hub for innovators at Stanford. Students and faculty in engineering, medicine, business, law, the humanities, sciences, and education find their way here to take on the world’s messy problems together. Human values are at the heart of our collaborative approach. We focus on creating spectacularly transformative learning experiences. Along the way, our students develop a process for producing creative solutions to even the most complex challenges they tackle. This is the core of what we do.

In October, we celebrated our first-year MS Design students in their Time(piece) project showcase. Students were challenged to construct a timepiece that measures a unique, non-linear type of time. Ranging from playful to provocative, the projects inspired new ways of thinking around how we experience and design with time. Over the next several weeks, we’ll meet a few of our students and learn more about their timepieces. Stay tuned! #design #designprocess #humancentereddesign #designthinking #MSdesign #gradstudent Anastasha Rachel Gunawan, Brigid White, Eric Singleton, Hillary Lodzanyama, Diane Rhim, Julia Hou, Kelly Chou, Maggie Namaganda, Rishika Gundi, Sanzhar Myrzagalym, MBA, Shawn Smith, Yousef A.

The Center for Design was honored to host Carissa Carter and Scott Doorley from The Stanford d.school during their visit to Boston to promote their new book, “Assembling Tomorrow: A Guide to Designing a Thriving Future.” When asked why their new book used the word assembling in the title instead of designing, Carter explained that we as members of society may already have the parts and pieces we need, so all we need to figure out is how to assemble them. Thank you for joining us and leading such a thoughtful discussion! ?? Over the past few years, I have been working at the intersection of climate change adaptation, natural resource management, poverty, gender, and social-ecological systems research. These experiences have deeply shaped my understanding on how climate change is disproportionately affecting communities dependent on natural resources— who also often have limited adaptive capacity. While thinking through 'solutions' and 'recommendations', I began reflecting on what it takes to design for challenges as vast and interconnected as climate change, natural resource management, and poverty alleviation. A few years ago, I discovered The Stanford d.school webinars led by Jeremy Utley, which sparked my interest in design thinking and inspired me to pursue more formal training in this area. Would highly recommend checking out the series here! https://lnkd.in/gNK89DNa Recently, I completed a five-week virtual course at The Stanford d.school on 'Putting Design into Practice for Social Impact'. For my project, I focused on thinking about how to design gender-transformative climate adaptation projects that don't lead to maladaptation. I found the human-centred design practices and innovative, and interactive exercises to engage stakeholders very insightful. I hope to challenge myself to use these practices as I continue to design projects and conduct research in the areas of natural resource management, climate adaptation and gender equity. A heartfelt thank you to Nadia Roumani and Thomas Both for creating an inspiring and engaging virtual learning experience—I am deeply grateful for your guidance!

First-year MS Design student Kelly Chou shares more about her Time(piece) project. ? ? ? In this project, students investigated an element of time of interest to them and constructed a timepiece–a clock—for it. But a clock is never just a clock. Time is integral to design work. Along with its cousins pace and efficiency, time has an outsize influence on what and why we make.
What is the meaning of time and how do we measure it? This was the topic of my first ever design project at The Stanford d.school. My project, "are we there yet?" is an exploration of meditation periods and serves as a commentary on the use (or misuse) of mindfulness in the context of productivity. When meditation is framed as a tool for productivity, it becomes just another task to get done in the day. But what does it actually mean to "be done" with meditation? Through talking with a wide variety of meditators-- from casual mindfulness app users to a Zen Master--I discovered that this idea of "productive meditation" actually creates significant barriers for beginner-to-intermediate meditators, who implicitly adopt an achievement mindset toward meditation. I set out to create a new experience that reconnects people with their sense of embodied time to define their own meditation sessions. In my final piece, viewers interact by crossing off lines of text on a wall as a form of meditation. The writing tools are attached to objects of various shapes (a long pole, a volleyball, a plank of wood, etc) to demand mental focus and controlled breath while crossing off lines. A video of my own attempt plays in the background as an accompaniment. Thank you to everyone who spent time with my piece. I was awed to see it brought to life with your unique marks.
