I truly enjoyed my time with Natalie Born recently, with links shared below. In a wide-ranging conversation, we discussed "No-Excuses Innovation," a book I co-authored with Walter B. Herbst, Ph.D. and published by Stanford University Press.
Innovation is often seen as the domain of tech giants and industry disruptors, but what about small and medium-sized enterprises? Are they at a disadvantage, or do they have unique opportunities to innovate faster than their larger competitors? Bruce Vojak, founder of Breakthrough Innovation Advisors, LLC and author of No Excuses Innovation, joins the podcast to discuss why mature businesses struggle with innovation, the fears that hold them back, and the simple, low-cost steps they can take to start thinking differently. He breaks down the myths surrounding innovation and provides practical insights for business leaders looking to stay ahead of the curve. Listen in Here: ?? Apple: https://lnkd.in/eaw9cr8 ?? I’ve often said that Serial Innovators—those rare individuals who create and deliver breakthrough innovations in mature companies—are the most important people you’ve never heard of. Following my January appearance on the Product Mastery Now Podcast, hosted by Chad McAllister, PhD, Chad interviewed Serial Innovator Nancy C Dawes. In addition to renewing both Duncan Hines cookies and Pringles crisps, Nancy transformed Olay from a dying brand into a market leader. A rare opportunity to hear directly from a proven Serial Innovator, I encourage you to listen to or view Nancy’s interview with Chad (see below for links). Then, should you desire to connect the dots, you can triangulate Nancy's story with what I spoke of with Chad (see below for links) regarding the large number of Serial Innovators I interviewed with colleagues Abbie Griffin and Ray Price, leading to our authoring the definitive work on this topic, “Serial Innovators: How Individuals Create and Deliver Breakthrough Innovations in Mature Firms” (Stanford University Press, 2012). Wishing you all the best as you explore innovation! It was a true pleasure and an honour earlier today to be able to recognise the excellent work of Prof. Henry Yeung by presenting him the Regional Studies Association 2024 Best Book Award! The video from the ceremony can be watched at the link below.

My book is officially released today! “Contested City: Citizen Advocacy and Survival in Modern Baghdad” tells the history of how ordinary Baghdadis navigated periods of extraordinary challenges from 1950-2011. How did regular people negotiate with the government to survive-or even thrive-during periods of war, foreign occupation, devastating economic sanctions, and dictatorship? Featuring letters and petitions written by residents of Baghdad, and drawing on 100 interviews, this book highlights the resilience of Iraqis even as they faced excruciating choices. “Contested City” is now available from Amazon and other booksellers, as well as from Stanford University Press at https://lnkd.in/g8GaJ7sX

Proud ARCE moment! We are so, so pleased that Andrew Simon, an ARCE Fellow from 2014-2015 and now senior lecturer of Middle Eastern studies at Dartmouth College, has received the thirty-fifth Modern Language Association Prize for Contingent Faculty and Independent Scholars by the Modern Language Association of America in December! The award was for his book Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt, published by Stanford University Press in 2022, which explores cassette tape culture and everyday technology in Egypt. "My time as an ARCE Fellow played a central part in what would become Media of the Masses, a book that was a decade in the making and the outcome of countless experiences in Egypt. Without ARCE's generous support, this project would not have been possible," shares Andrew. And to add more excitement to the news, Dar El Shorouk - ??? ?????? in Egypt will be publishing an Arabic translation of Media of the Masses? under the title: ????? ????????: ????? ??????? ?? ???
