Founding Stanford Sustainable Investment Group has been nothing short of an emotional whirlwind. From being initially rejected by Stanford's new student organization application to now advising on the allocation of Elemental Impact’s $100M award from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and working with (and learning from) investors at my climate VC “celebrity crush” Lowercarbon Capital, the experience has opened doors that I never even knew existed. Driven by a desire to immerse myself within the Silicon Valley climate tech ecosystem and bridge the white space in sustainable investing opportunities for undergraduate students, the idea to found what is now the nation’s first student-run investment advisory for sustainability investors quickly consumed me. I am obsessed with the process, and have met so many amazing people along the way (special shoutout to Mary Lee, Dilan D., and Olivia Wang). I've spent my entire life chasing pipedreams and cannot put to words the thrill, purpose, and fulfillment it brings me each and every day. I mean, isn’t following your dreams what life is all about? A lot of people ask me, “Samir, how did you get the idea for x?” or “Samir, how did you get y started?”.?The reality is that ideas rarely arrive fully formed, but instead, slowly evolve over the course of weeks, months, and even years. While it's easy to fantasize about our goals, the real miracles lie in the work we often avoid—it's in the execution where the magic happens. I often say that all it takes to change the world is to start dumping on a Google Doc (not sponsored, though I wish). All of this to say, if you have a dream, I have one piece of advice for you: Get. The Stanford Sustainable Investment Group (SSIG) – a student-run investment advisory that works to develop capital solutions to sustainability challenges – delivered a deep and high-quality final presentation (and 60-page paper!) to us, their spring client partner, on their market analysis of investment options in the carbon, cold chain, and mobility sectors. In Galway’s quest to accelerate the sustainability transition, we are thrilled to partner with and support young people like the SSIG student members as they learn about and contribute to achieving triple bottom line results. The team’s engagement and deliverables were impressive, and we look forward following their work with other clients, as well as staying in touch about potential future opportunities with us.
