Former and current foster youth, as well as youth who have experienced homelessness, will now be guaranteed admission to Sacramento State under the new Guardian Scholars Promise. The initiative was recently announced by President J. Luke Wood, PhD and Vice President of Student Affairs Aniesha K. M. and removes a barrier for Guardian Scholars participants who are eligible for enrollment at the University.

Foster youth attending University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), or community colleges in California can now attend college at no cost, thanks to the Fostering Futures program introduced by SB 307 legislation signed in July 2023. This program covers the full cost of tuition, books, housing, and food for foster youth. To access these benefits, students simply need to indicate their foster youth status on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application.
