  • Last week, we were thrilled to host over 100 members of the Stanford Alumni Real Estate Council (SREC) back on campus for our 14th Annual SREC Fall Conference! The event kicked off with an inspiring Welcome Dinner at Rosewood Sand Hill, featuring talks by Dr. Arun Majumdar and Dr. Sarah Billington, who shared updates on the transformative work being done at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. A huge thank you to our keynote speaker, Rick Magnuson (GI Partners), for his thought-provoking discussion with Andy Richard on data centers and so much more! The conference would not have been complete without Howard E. Wolf's campus update and John Burns’ unparalleled insights into the housing market—always conference highlights! We extend our gratitude to our incredible moderators — Jeff Birdwell, Danielle Dy Buncio, Dean Egerter, Nicole Sermier, and Ron Sturzenegger — and the distinguished panelists: Daniel Broderick, Thomas Errath, Pete Flint, Priyanka Garg, Tiffany Griego, Matt Haden, Clifton Harness, Brian Heafey, Amy Johannes, Jeevan Kalanithi, Loren King, John O’Brien, Louis Schump, Fee Stubblefield, and Charles Young. Together, they explored critical topics such as Capital Markets, Distressed Assets, AI in Real Estate, and the Future of Successful Workplaces. This year’s conference also offered exclusive experiences, including a “Hoover Behind-the-Scenes” tour led by Jeffrey Jones and a fascinating walking tour, “Stanford Before and After the 1906 Quake,” hosted by Nelson Koen. Finally, a heartfelt thanks to the SREC Committee—Co-Chairs Andy Richard and Charlie Rose, along with members Julia Boyd Corso, David Butler, Melinda Ellis Evers, Patricio Gutierrez Tommasi, Jeff A. Jacobson, Nelson Koen, Hanns Lee, and Jair Lynch - for their tireless efforts in curating thought-provoking sessions, unparalleled networking opportunities, and moments to reconnect with Stanford and fellow alumni. We’re already looking forward to next year’s conference, November 12-15, and the chance to come together again!

    We had excellent turnout at the recent BREAA/SPIRE happy hour at Harrington's Bar & Grill. What a time: we had an engaging fireside chat with Ken Harrington who told us about the bar's history and that of his family, an exclusive tour of the building's upper floors, and even heard the tale of how Redco Development secured a real estate deal to bring the Harrington Family back to their bar -- all on a handshake with no lawyers.     Today, I am beyond excited to finally unveil BuildQ, a digital workspace designed to streamline access to capital for sustainable infrastructure projects. From deep retrofits of commercial real estate properties to large-scale renewable energy projects, we are leveraging the latest in AI and data analytics to simplify project management, optimize financing processes, and bring together project developers, government agencies, and financiers to manage transactions with unprecedented ease. Think, "TurboTax for Project Finance"! ?? BuildQ: Accelerating the Green Energy Transition ?? As a bit of background, this is a project I've been thinking about for a long time. In part, I started BuildQ out of the frustration I experienced when trying to advance clean energy projects throughout my career. Regulatory uncertainty delayed projects for months. Transactions were mired in paperwork, shared over multiple data rooms and hundreds of emails. And, consultants who rely on manual and inefficient processes were paid MILLIONS because there were no better options. Come to find out, I haven't been alone in this feeling. Every government agency, financier, and project developer I've spoken to has agreed that fragmented funding and regulatory landscapes--and the lack of tools to navigate them--are slowing the green energy transition. What's more, real and perceived complexities of financing multi-million dollar projects dissuade property owners from undertaking necessary improvements to their properties, often to the detriment of underserved and vulnerable populations' health and safety. It's time for a change. Technology is finally at a point where it can make a real difference in accelerating the transition to green energy and improving the living conditions of millions across the globe.
