?? Can an intervention designed to help people in mental health crisis adhere to prescription meds reduce involuntary hospitalizations and ultimately save lives? ?? In an age of extreme wealth inequality, can a state-run mechanism designed to build financial savings for kids from low-wealth families expand real access to opportunity? ?? Can an evidence-based?maternal-newborn standard of?care be adapted to a community model that expands its impact and decreases neonatal mortality? These are just a few of the pressing questions that 5 SIL-funded teams of Stanford University researchers, working in close collaboration with government agencies, school districts, healthcare organizations, and nonprofits will seek to answer over the next three years. Still processing the first year of the Evidence for Policy fellowship with Stanford Impact Labs in the days since our closing cohort meeting last week. I learned so much from them and about myself in the process of helping them all apply data and evidence to their policy projects on everything from support for folks experiencing homelessness, economic development support for minority-owned businesses, wildfire response and recovery, auxiliary dwelling unit incentives, rental assistance programs and economic development strategies. I am so looking forward to keeping in touch and seeing how each of you moves through your next steps on these projects AND in your careers as public administrators. Hana, Michelle, Misan - I am so glad to be on this journey with you and can't wait to see what we can do next!

Last week, SIL’s Marina Kaneko and Jenny Kauffman brought together Stanford University faculty and research teams with their expert partners across business, nonprofit, and government sectors to kick-off new collaborations for leveraging research insights to create social impact. Six multi-disciplinary SIL-funded, solutions-focused teams gathered to discuss how to make progress on issues ranging from equitable access to family-centered care to healthier teen smartphone use. The workshop was a unique opportunity for teams to engage different perspectives, strengthen a shared vision, and accelerate their ambitious plans for impact at scale. One participant shared about the event, “It was really wonderful to hear from all types of backgrounds and industries.” Another noted, “In-person meetings remain the most effective way to ensure we're all moving in the right direction together.” Stanford Impact Labs is inspired by the passion and insights shared by all of the participants, and we look forward to each group's journey ahead as they put social science to work for society. Thank you to our external co-facilitator, Ana Tellez, for helping to lead several discussions on the importance of community engagement and how inequities show up in complex issues! ?? Digital Technologies for Refugee Support: Opportunities and Risks??? Last week, at Stanford King Center on Global Development, we co-hosted an event together with the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, to discuss the possibilities of using digital technologies for refugee support. The event explored the intersection of technology and humanitarian aid in a compelling panel discussion on the risks, limitations and opportunities of using digital technologies for refugee support. Experts from UNHCR, Stanford, and the Danish Tech Ambassador’s Office shared their insights on how AI and other digital technologies can improve refugee response, particularly during global crises in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan and others. The event, moderated by Denmark’s Deputy Tech Ambassador Martine Gram Barbry, highlighted how data-driven AI tools, like GeoMatch developed by Stanford Impact Labs, can help connect refugees with communities where they have the best chance of thriving. But, the conversation also emphasized the ethical and practical challenges these technologies pose, such as data privacy, biases in AI systems, and the need for responsible implementation. Thank you to our esteemed panelists Deputy UNHCR Kelly T. Clements, Professor of Political Science & Faculty Co-Director of the Immigration Policy Lab Jens Hainmueller, Executive Director of the Immigration Policy Lab Adam Lichtenheld, PhD, Techplomacy Team Leader at the Office of Denmark’s Tech Ambassador Christian Mogensen, and Assistant Professor of Statistics at Stanford Dominik Rothenh?usler for their valuable perspectives. It's clear that cross-sector collaboration is vital to leveraging tech for better humanitarian outcomes. ?? #TechForGood #RefugeeSupport #AIInnovation #DigitalInclusion #Techplomacy #HumanitarianTech

We're incredibly grateful for the high praise and belief in collaborative defense from Stanford Law School's John Donohue and Eric Baldwin in this AMAZING op-ed piece published by Project Syndicate. You may not realize this, but odds are you know someone represented by a public defender—because 80% of accused people cannot afford counsel, about a third of Americans have had a loved one counselled by a public defender. Expanding what public defenders can do—and helping more people get access to things like housing, medicine, and emergency aid—is what drives us and this work. We are so excited about our partnership with Stanford Impact Labs to validate the outcomes of Collaborative Defense through external evaluations of our work and cannot wait to see what the future holds for the collaborative defense movement! #publicdefender #criminaljustice #legalnews
