From Austin sunrise to Austin sunset, our team made the most of SXSW EDU. It was invigorating to spend a week in a highly concentrated environment of creative, caring, and innovative educators, with a nonstop menu of keynote addresses, panels, workshops, and documentary films. We loved connecting with our collaborators Alexandra Slack, Laura Moore, and Steve Sandak of the National Education Equity Lab; with our Stanford d.school partners sam seidel, Olatunde Sobomehin, and Laura McBain; and with our colleague Jennifer Porter of OnRamps, among others. It was fantastic to attend a panel moderated by Stanford Digital Education advisory council member Jean-Claude Brizard. We came away with much to digest, read, think about, and act upon. (Including walks along Lady Bird Lake and the clamor of grackles in the live oak trees.) Digital learning can be the source of deepened connections between high schools and universities — and those collaborations benefit both students and institutions. That’s one of the points made in “Digital Education for Access and Equity,” a chapter in the new book Recentering Learning: Complexity, Resilience and Adaptability in Higher Education, co-edited by Joshua Kim, Margaret Debelius, and Eddie Maloney. The chapter presents case studies of three programs (UT Austin’s OnRamps, the National Education Equity Lab and Davidson College’s Davidson Next) that enable selective universities to offer online or hybrid courses in high schools serving low-income communities. Since the launch of Stanford Digital Education just over three years ago, close to 2,000 students in Title I high schools across the country have taken our courses, offered in collaboration with the National Education Equity Lab. These students have been able to gain college experience — and Stanford University credit — while in high school, in courses devoted to bioengineering, computer science, college writing, ethics, political and religious philosophy, and African American studies. He’ll discuss how collaborations between universities, and strategic partnerships with nonprofits such as the National Education Equity Lab, are empowering tens of thousands of high school students to earn college credit through online courses. Matthew will be joined by Jennifer Porter of Texas OnRamps, at University of Texas at Austin.
