Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab

On enhancing marginalised groups' role in public discourse, our researcher Ardita Vejseli presented today our initiative "Fostering Political Pluralism and Democratic Values" at the World Forum for Democracy at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. ?? She presented how by organizing national deliberative polls and local deliberative events, EPI strengthens and advances the democratic debate on strategic priorities, highlighting the need for citizens' involvement in discussions. After the deliberative polls, the citizens expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss the key problems that affect society among themselves and with experts and decision-makers in structured discussions. ??? Since 2017, EPI has organized four national deliberative polls and six local deliberative events on national reforms related to democratic institutions, equality, electoral reforms, social cohesion, European integration, security and economic stability. At each of these events, EPI gathers around 200 citizens, representatives from state institutions, civil society organizations, the media and political parties in structured discussions with the aim of greater involvement of everyone in the public discourse. EPI organizes the deliberative polls in cooperation with the Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab with financial support from the National Endowment for Democracy from the USA.

It's a wonderful exchange meeting for Internet issues and technology governance. It was my absolute pleasure to be invited by the Council of Europe as a Keynote Speaker for this conference! I presented the results from two Deliberative exercises on AI in education I worked on at the Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab. I argued for the use of more participatory & deliberative tools in the regulation of AI, by including the voices of those most affected by the technology. In the case of AI in education, that of students and teachers. Our results show that students and teachers across the US: ?? Already use tools like ChatGPT and similar chatbots ?? Do not want schools to ban AI, but want clearer guidelines on how to use it ?? At the end of September, the Consulate General of Brazil in San Francisco welcomed the President of the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF),?Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, and the General Attorney,?Paulo Gonet , for an agenda organized by the?Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab in partnership with the?Escola Nacional de Magistratura. Justice Barroso presented at the?Hoover Institute?on the Brazilian judiciary’s use of AI tools to streamline case management, monitor the?UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and reduce the STF's backlog—now at its lowest since 1993. He also highlighted the?Brazilian electoral system?as a global benchmark for security and innovation. This visit fostered dialogue on innovation’s role in public sector efficiency and reinforced Brazil's position as a leader in key areas.
