Stanford Clinical Informatics Fellowship alum and new faculty member Julie L. applies best practices in clinical decision support to advance antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention. Check out the article below!
Excited to share our latest article in Antibiotic Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology, a primer on Clinical Decision Support (CDS) for antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention programs. Grateful for my experiences in the Clinical Decision Support Committee at Stanford Health Care for the real-world insights that went into this article. ? In short, we applied the "Five Rights of CDS" and "Ten Commandments of Effective CDS" to illustrate how CDS can optimize antibiotic prescribing, strengthen diagnostic stewardship, and improve infection prevention. This was reinforced by case studies on Vancomycin best practice advisory alert and C. diff order panels. ?? As November is Centers for Disease Control and Prevention C Diff Awareness month and World Health Organization Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (Nov 18-24), ?it's important to highlight how CDS systems need to make right decisions faster & easier for clinicians, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based care. Just concluded my first #AMIA2024 Annual Symposium, and what a thrilling and educational 5 days it was! - As Chair of Networking, I was proud to share an update with AMIA Clinical Informatics Fellows (ACIF) members about our inaugural mentor matching program, which connected 34 CI fellows with 25 talented and wise mentors from around the country! Very excited to continue expanding this program under fearless president Jessica Pourian MD with my Networking committee Isabella Slaby, DO and Margaret Soulen and in partnership with PINA and Kristian Feterik, MD, MBA. - It was an awesome experience co-presenting with the inimitable Stephen Ma to an engaged audience about our institution’s pilot results on the impact of DAX copilot ambient AI scribe on physician documentation practices and time. Grateful to Patricia Garcia, Shreya Shah, Margaret Smith, Jeannie Yejin Jeong, Christopher Sharp, Stanford Healthcare AI Applied Research Team (HEA3RT) and many more coauthors and mentors! - Winning 2nd place in the FHIR App competition with our SmartAlert project, which targets lab overutilization through the combined power of advanced predictive ML and well-designed clinical decision support. Huge thank you to Jonathan H. Chen, Fatemeh Amrollahi, Stephen Ma, Yixing J., Jack McKeown, David Mui, MD MBA, Trevor Crowell, and many more for their work and support of this project. - Taking home the annual CDS working group Jeopardy trophy with fellow CI fellows Dong-han Yao, MD, Alex Plattner, Tamer Salhab Altamimi, and Orlando A. Nunez Isaac - Hanging out with the wonderful and accomplished Stanford Clinical Informatics Fellowship current fellows, alumni, and program leadership - Tons of learning, sharing, and connecting in general!
