Stanford Center for Digital Health (CDH), in partnership with Advancing Health Online (AHO) and the Bay Area Global Health Alliance, has released a new white paper examining the current landscape and future potential of Generative AI in driving health-related behavior change in low- and middle-income countries. The paper synthesizes findings and recommendations that are relevant to global health funders, tech platforms, and implementers working within the GenAI space. Extensive research was conducted from Aug-Dec 2024, including roundtable discussions, in-depth interviews with dozens of sector leaders, and an analysis of more than 250 GenAI projects worldwide to answer the questions: ??Where is GenAI currently being used and what are the greatest successes?? ??How can we realize greater impact and unlock the full potential of GenAI, both for behavior change and broader healthcare applications? ?? Our white paper, Generative AI for Health in Low & Middle Income Countries, is now available! This paper examines where GenAI is currently being used, what the greatest successes are, and how we can realize greater impact and unlock the full potential of GenAI, both for behavior change and broader healthcare applications. Our goal was to create a comprehensive resource that helps guide strategic investments and policy decisions. This resource identifies high-impact use cases and priority health areas while also addressing key implementation challenges and offering practical recommendations for future implementation. This research was conducted through two expert workshops—one at Stanford and one in Nairobi, Kenya—along with 24 in-depth qualitative interviews with academics, health system leaders, implementers, and funders, and a survey with 145 respondents. Stanford CDH Digital Health Scholar Daniel Seung Kim is the recipient of an American Diabetes Association 2025 Pathway to Stop Diabetes grant. The Pathway program supports breakthroughs in diabetes by providing five to seven years of funding and world-class mentorship to exceptional early-career scientists. Dr. Kim's research focuses on increasing exercise as a medium to improve?glycemic control via a smartphone application (My Heart Counts) that autonomously generates text-based coaching messages. "Through the technological development funded by the American Diabetes Association, the My Heart Counts smartphone application will 'learn' from a user's response to coaching messages and tailor future text-based prompts to better account for an individual's psychological profile (e.g., what type of coaching personality they prefer) and activity patterns (e.g., when are they most likely to exercise)," says Dr. Kim. "This study and many others in this field give me a deep sense of optimism about the potential of generative AI in health care," says Stanford CDH Director Eleni Linos in a conversation with JAMA+ AI's Roy Perlis. Their discussion recaps key takeaways from Dr. Linos and team's research on patient satisfaction with AI-generated responses to medical questions, published this past October in JAMA Network Open. The team concluded that "AI-generated responses were received more positively by patients, and that patients preferred and were more satisfied with the responses generated with the help of AI." Reflecting on the research, Dr. Linos explains: "If we can create a win-win situation where doctors can get back some time for real in-person communication with their patients and the medical work they're so good at, and patients are getting more in-depth, longer, more detailed, more accurate responses to their queries, that's a really unique situation where this type of technology is helping both the patient and the clinical team, increasing efficiency, and no one loses."
