In an outstanding example of team science, Stanford researchers will lead a major multinational project to study biology of cancer development in blood. The International Consortium on a Cancer Biomarker for Early Detection (INTERCEPT) will investigate traditional and novel risk factors, including biomarkers, for several types of cancers in the United States, Ghana, Israel, Japan, and Taiwan. Among the unique strengths of the study are: its large size (3,840 participants); the inclusion of multiple forms of cancer; a diverse, multi-ethnic population; the parallel investigation of biology, and psychological and environmental risk factors, such as loneliness, mental health, well-being, and climate change. The study will also assess the association of genomic and immunologic biomarkers with cancer status. Professor of Medicine and Stanford Cancer Institute member Ann Hsing, PhD, is the PI of the project. Hsing and her team at Stanford, including 16 faculty and over 25 staff, will work with established U.S. and international collaborators. https://lnkd.in/gX-P-56z #CancerDetection

The discovery that some malignant cancers form connections with the brain’s circuitry that help fuel tumor growth could help researchers better understand how to treat or stop the cancers altogether. Michelle Monje Julien Sage Watch: https://bit.ly/41EhXtW #BrainCancer #CancerReserach

When cancer patients’ view of their disease shifts from catastrophic to manageable, their physical experience of the disease improves. SCI members Lidia Schapira, MD, Alia Crum, PhD, Jonathan Berek, MD, and David Spiegel, MD, found watching a series of short documentary-style films helps them make the shift.
