Promoting justice in Minnesota for victims of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and trafficking.
关于我们
Standpoint (formerly Battered Women's Legal Advocacy Project) is a state-wide program that serves domestic and sexual violence victims, their advocates, attorneys and the general public in Minnesota. Standpoint provides legal information, consultation, state-wide training, litigation support, technical assistance and develops model policy for domestic and sexual violence programs around confidentiality, record keeping, conflict of interest and children's records, to name a few. We are a unique agency that advocates for system change, advocates to secure access to justice and, advocates to improve the legal system's response to domestic and sexual violence. We exist to respond effectively to the constantly evolving legal needs of domestic and sexual violence victims and we are the first resource people turn to in a legal crisis. Standpoint recognizes the importance of an effective and skilled advocate to support domestic and sexual violence victims. Standpoint takes a leadership role in several state-wide collaborative efforts to address the legal and community needs of domestic and sexual violence victims. We have a strong collaborative relationship with numerous domestic and sexual violence organizations, legal advocacy programs, and legal service providers in Minnesota. Standpoint often collaborates in a variety of ways from policy to legal actions. However, we are the only statewide agency that provides on the spot, free legal advice, consultation, and technical assistance to domestic and sexual violence victims, domestic and sexual violence advocates, attorneys and other systems professionals.

Standpoint was honored to participate in this case as amicus in support of Ms. Clark. Minnesota’s self-defense law must evolve to take into consideration the totality of the circumstances faced by victim/survivors of domestic violence and acknowledge that imminent harm is not always immediate. We are grateful to our counsel, Nathan Converse, @Leah Huyser, and Ashley Thronson at Fredrikson & Byron, P.A. & Byron P.A. for their excellent work articulating victim/survivor’s interests in this matter. We congratulate Ms. Clark and her team at Forsgren Fisher McCalmont DeMarea Tysver LLP on this win!
Forsgren Fisher client Stephanie Clark — a victim of undisputed intimate partner violence who was prosecuted after acting in self-defense — will receive a new trial following a Minnesota Supreme Court order issued earlier this week. We are overjoyed for Ms. Clark and other victims of intimate partner violence, all of whom should have the same quality of right to act in self-defense as someone who is threatened with harm by a stranger outside of the home. Congratulations to Ms. Clark and her legal team, including Forsgren Fisher appellate counsel Caitlinrose Fisher, Matt Forsgren, and Annika Misurya, and trial counsel Eric Doolittle of the Appelman Law Firm. #criminaldefense #selfdefense #intimatepartnerviolence #appellatelaw #forsgrenfisher https://lnkd.in/gvsVtg6q

Standpoint was honored to participate in this case as amicus, supporting Gender Justice position by arguing the importance of privacy for victim/survivors. We are grateful to our partners, Saul Ewing LLP and Katie Barrett Wiik who helped consult on this brief. ? Access to emergency contraception is a non-negotiable right for people who can become pregnant. For victims of sexual violence, it is essential that this right is protected. This week, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled that "a pharmacist's refusal to fill a woman's prescription for emergency contraception based on his personal beliefs constitutes illegal sex discrimination under the Minnesota Human Rights Act." We are grateful for the hard work Gender Justice does to protect access to contraception.
JUST ANNOUNCED: A major victory in an UNPRECEDENTED ruling in our case filed against a pharmacist who refused to fill a patient's birth control prescription in rural Minnesota! “Today’s ruling sends a clear message that discrimination in reproductive health care for any reason is not only unacceptable, but illegal under Minnesota law,” says Jess Braverman, legal director for Gender Justice. “It’s a huge victory for every person who seeks care without prejudice or refusal based on beliefs held by others.”
