The California Association of NonProfits has recognized St. Mary's Center as NonProfit of the Year 2021 in the East Bay (District 9.) The award says, “In a moment of fear and uncertainty, you provided food, housing, social services, and education to our most at risk, and should be celebrated and appreciated.” It's the sixth year CalNonprofits has partnered with the California Legislature to recognize service providers.
关于我们
St. Mary’s Center is a community of hope, justice, and healing that serves at-risk seniors and preschoolers in the heart of Oakland. We strive to improve quality of life through counseling, housing, nutrition, advocacy and social support. An independent non-profit social service organization with headquarters and five service locations along the San Pablo Avenue corridor in West Oakland, St. Mary’s Center provides basic needs and offers hope to more than 1,000 Seniors and 40 Preschool families every year. Services include: • 41 units of transitional housing • Counseling, case management, and housing navigation • Money management and advocacy • Full-day Preschool St. Mary’s Center can trace our roots back to 1939 and community programs initiated by the Sisters of Social Service. A 1973 survey by Oakland Community Organizations helped direct our plans to serve Preschool Families and Seniors with education, nutrition, counseling and social services. Following the 1989 earthquake, we expanded our services to unhoused Seniors and created a portfolio of 41 units of transitional housing that support Seniors in their journey home. We’re thankful for the energy, generosity, and support of the hundreds of volunteers that work with us annually. We’re proud to be a part of the giving and receiving that these volunteers and our program participants share, enabling us to continue offering comprehensive services to our most vulnerable community members. Our staff include professionals and paraprofessionals in the fields of social work, community organizing, public policy and administration. Visit our website for career opportunities.

Prepared Remarks on SSI and Homelessness to California Senate Budget Sub-Committee 3, Sharon Cornu, Executive Director, St. Mary's Center
California Senate Budget Sub-Committee 3 Senator Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson, Chair Senator Shannon Grove Senator Caroline Menjivar March 20, 2025 Prepared Remarks on SSI and Homelessness Sharon Cornu, Executive Director, St. Mary's Center Good morning, Senators, and thank you for your time. My name is Sharon Cornu, and I’m the executive director of St. Mary Center in West Oakland—a community of hope, healing, and justice. While we’re often thought of as a soup kitchen and shelter, St. Mary’s has grown into much more. Today, we provide homeless services, transitional housing, a vibrant Senior Center serving breakfast and hot lunch, and even a Preschool. I’m here today to highlight the undeniable link between the inadequacy of SSI benefits and homelessness. At St. Mary’s, we run a housing clinic twice a week. Last year alone, we saw 1,247 visits, primarily from seniors living on SSI with just $1,000 a month. Over the past five years, we’ve secured housing for more than 200 seniors. This program, though unfunded, addresses a critical need by offering low-barrier access to vital information, counseling, and support during housing searches. Among seniors enrolled in our case management, 95% rely on SSI, and approximately 85% are Black—individuals who have faced a lifetime of systemic discrimination in education, healthcare, housing, employment, and finance. The reality is stark: affordable housing is scarce, and SSI benefits remain shamefully inadequate. California cannot simply defer to the federal government for a cost-of-living adjustment. Action is urgently needed to raise SSI income and prevent more seniors from falling into homelessness. When I joined St. Mary’s six years ago, I thought of SSI as support for the aged, blind, and disabled. I mistakenly associated disability with substance or alcohol abuse. In my time here, I’ve met seniors who worked as truck drivers, childcare providers, landscapers, handymen, domestic workers, and even shoe salesmen. They toiled in the underground economy, where their labor went unrewarded and unrecorded—denying them the safety net they deserve in their golden years. I urge you to take a hard look at boosting SSI benefits, and I warmly invite you to visit St. Mary’s Center. Come share a meal with our seniors and see firsthand the challenges and resilience of this community. Thank you for all that you do.

(To the point: if you are able to think about your year-end support, start here! https://lnkd.in/g3wi9DYM) I was honored to spend two days with the development team at St. Mary's Center in West Oakland, strategizing messaging and engagement opportunities to amplify their impact in the community. Fifty years strong! So impressive and so important. Please learn more about their mission of #hope #healing and #justice. I was inspired to consider how dedicated they are to the elders of the community (and preschool families too!) We all have a collective obligation to support each other - moving lives from urgency to agency! 🙌🏾💪🏾❤️
The Council of Elders, Board of Directors and Management Team of St. Mary's Center met recently to review progress on our Vision 2025: Charity to Justice strategic plan, celebrated our achievements, addressed challenges, and dug into our opportunities. Cannot imagine a more dedicated, compassionate or knowledgeable group to do this work with! We are ready for the future!
