“Amid today’s movement against D.E.I. and Black studies, Tess Chakkalakal’s A MATTER OF COMPLEXION makes an urgent case for the importance of Black artistry during racially reactive and violent times… Chakkalakal’s thoughtfully written biography is a timely reminder of the influence of artists like Charles W. Chesnutt today, when perhaps only literature has the power to sustain us.” Read the full The New York Times review here: https://lnkd.in/emDsZ-ev

I'm so honored to be one of the winners of the 2024 Porchlight Business Book Awards! A few reflections: 1. I hope this serves to advance the core message of my book: welcoming immigrants is one of the smartest things a community and country can do. Not because it's good for immigrants. But because it's good for OUR economic and social prosperity. Thanks to all those who've read and promoted it. I hope there are many more of you to come. 2. Writing a book is one of the loneliest things I've ever done. Lots of uncertainty and self doubt about whether anyone would even care. This kind of validation means a lot. 3. Most people don't see that behind every author there's an incredible but largely anonymous team. I'm so thankful to my editor Tim Bartlett, to St. Martin's Press for taking a chance on me, and to my agent Jim Levine. They deserve the recognition as much as anyone. It's a day of #gratitude and #celebration.
