Shirley Snell had been feeling tired. That was her only symptom, other than some shortness of breath. The Deer Lodge, Montana woman had no idea it was actually cardiomyopathy — a weak heart functioning below 25 percent. She was one of the first people in recent years to get a defibrillator implant in Butte, the only place offering them in southwestern Montana. The service is now thanks to Dr. Carlos Albrecht, MD, a cardiologist at Intermountain Health St. James Hospital. He came to Butte earlier this year, bringing decades of experience from years of practice, most recently in North Carolina. Since arriving in Butte in February of 2024, Albrecht has performed the defibrillator procedure over 10 times, but Snell was one of the first. Her surgery went well, as did her recovery. Her shortness of breath was alleviated, as well as her tiredness. “I am handling it well, and I'm still up walking. So I think I'm doing pretty good,” said Snell. “I've had a good experience with St. James. I've had a good experience with the doctors up there. I have not had a problem. I don't have a complaint. It's been a really good experience, and I am getting back to where I can move.” #WeAreLeadersInClinicalExcellence #TogetherForTheHealthiestLives

Practice makes perfect! Recently we teamed up with Butte-Silver Bow Emergency Management and our community partners to conduct a full-scale emergency exercise at Bert Mooney Airport. Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department, A-1 Ambulance, and Life Flight Network ran through processes of getting the fire out and patients to hospital facilities. Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department did an amazing job of assisting with traffic control and community awareness. The team at St. James conducted exercises on how and where acting patients would be treated. These mock exercises are important for our teams to be ready should a real emergency occur. The safety of all of our patients, visitors and caregivers is our highest priority. 🌟 A big thank you to our caregivers for their work and to community members for standing in as "patients" for this practice.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition with a high mortality rate if it isn't identified and treated immediately. Lactate testing is one of the more important tests performed on emergency department patients who might be septic. The test provides information that helps caregivers identify the patient’s sepsis risk level and decide whether they should implement aggressive, early treatment for sepsis. Maria Brown, director of laboratory services at Intermountain Health St. James Hospital in Butte, Montana, had challenged her team to come up with ways to improve their KPI scores. Cindy Erickson, the chemistry technical specialist at St. James Hospital, saw a lactate testing as opportunity with potential for improvement to get results faster and at a lower cost. After consulting with system laboratory, Cindy learned that most Intermountain Peaks Region hospitals use blood gas analyzers for this test, averaging a 5-7 minute turnaround time for the test, and proposed that St. James Hospital move forward with the process improvement. This project is an excellent example of our culture of continuous improvement and commitment to being leaders in clinical excellence. It also shows how we are better together: being part of the Intermountain system benefits our patients by connecting our hospitals with tried-and-tested, data-driven best practices. #WeAreBetterTogether #TogetherForTheHealthiestLives
