This week as part of National Volunteer Week we are shining a spotlight on Alyssia Brown, a Pontotoc native, who is one of several students currently volunteering at St. Dominic Health. Alyssia is a Sophomore at Mississippi College studying Biology with a Chemistry minor. She said her experience volunteering at St. Dominic’s is helping to prepare her for her future goal of becoming a Physician Assistant. She said her grandmother, who served as a surgical tech, had a big influence on her decision to go into a healthcare-related field. As a volunteer, Alyssia serves patients, visitors and team members in a variety of areas, including surgery, ICUs and the cardiac unit. Alyssia grew up volunteering “The environment at St. Dominic’s has been so welcoming,” she said. “And as an introvert, this experience has been valuable in helping me to get out of my comfort zone and interact with people I am not familiar with. This will help me in my interactions with patients in my future career. I have enjoyed being exposed to different aspects of a large hospital setting and seeing the different sides of patient care.” St. Dominic’s offers volunteer opportunities for those 16 and older with a variety of skills and experience. If you know someone who might like to volunteer with us, share this link with them: https://bit.ly/3Q8Ix8D
