  • We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the School’s new personal device policy and the innovative ways we are using data to measure the success of its implementation. Head of School Connie Coker, alongside Associate Heads of School Hadley Moore and Karen Davis, were invited to present our policy and associated data in an exclusive Learning Lab experience at the National Association of Independent Schools Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Last week, these school leaders presented early indicators of improved academic performance and student wellbeing as an esteemed panel of mentors offered questions, insights, and feedback. Thank you to Stacia McFadden (Rowland Hall School, Utah), Laura Lee Breeding (Radical Becoming), Morva McDonald (Vice President of Leadership and Governance at NAIS), and Tim Fish (Two Chairs Studio) for serving on the panel of experts. St Anne’s School is so proud to be among national thought leaders and honored to shine in a format meant to highlight national and global innovations in education 🌟

    Head of School

Excited to see many independent school colleagues and friends in Nashville next week and to present and discuss “From Bell to Bell: The Outcomes of Phone Free Schooling” with my colleagues Hadley Moore and Karen Davis. While Haidt’s research is the first half of the story regarding smart phones and mental illness, we are excited to share compelling data from a comprehensive community effort at St. Anne's School of Annapolis about what we hope is the second half of this more promising story for adolescents when it comes to wellbeing and achievement. Hope you will join us in the National Association of Independent Schools Thrive Learning Lab on Friday, February 28, 11:15am-12:30pm. See you in Nashville at #NAISThrive!

Spotify: https://lnkd.in/esmUj8fs Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/e5NabtjF EPISODE 2 DETAILS: In the midst of an election year, St. Anne’s School has taken the lead on uniting its community through opportunities for connection and conversation at the faculty, student, and parent levels, reinforcing the School’s emphasis on civic-minded and issues-centered education, and highlighting the importance of civil discourse both inside and outside the classroom. In Episode 2, Head of School Connie Coker shares the research behind purpose-driven education and how that informs the School’s approach to teaching students how to be engaged, respectful, and civic-minded classmates and citizens. She discusses the steps she took this year in particular–conversations with other school leaders, faculty trainings, issuing a school-wide statement on Civil Discourse, and hosting a community Pluralism Potluck–to help unite the community amidst a polarizing election season. Two Middle School students, Lauren and Patrick, share their perspective on the School’s approach, highlighting various civic engagement opportunities at the School, and discussing their experiences in Advisory and at the Middle School Social Contract Convention, both of which allow students to practice their civil discourse skills in a safe, learning environment. Student Government Advisor Victoria Hiller also shares how her Student Government students are putting these skills into action and what the trickle down effect has been for the rest of the student body and beyond. Host: Liza Johnson (Director of Marketing & Communications) Guests: Connie Coker (Head of School), Victoria Hiller (Student Government Advisor), and Lauren and Patrick (Middle School Students)

  • “Potlucks are civic spaces that both embody and celebrate pluralism.” - Eboo Patel, Founder & President at Interfaith America Last week, parents, students, and staff gathered for a Pluralism Potluck to discuss civil discourse and civic engagement. In addition to watching the documentary Bring It to the Table by Julie Winokur, discussion revolved around issues-centered education, the importance of fostering deliberation, critical thinking, and genuine listening skills in young learners, and how students shouldn’t be asked to just sit at the table, but to bring something to it as engaged, respectful, and civic-minded citizens.
