Pet ownership has great benefits, particularly for seniors. Studies have shown that owning a pet increases activity levels, reduces stress, anxiety, and mental decline, and boosts healthy habits. For seniors with dogs, the necessary daily walks also increase socialization with neighbors and/or other dog owners, a facet vital to those who may face loneliness. The unconditional love and companionship provided by furry family members are important to maintaining hope. But, when a pet owner is food insecure, their pet is too. Our food pantries, while primarily for humans, will also offer pet food, treats and/or cat litter when it is available from generous donors. How can you help and make this part of your Lenten almsgiving? Teams will compete March 24-April 7 to collect non-perishable food and hygiene products to benefit our Cold Spring and Erlanger food pantries - the winner is the team that collects the most by weight. Each week until Easter, we will feature a different way for you to give to help our neighbors in need. Our focus for days 1-4 is pet food, treats, and supplies for pet owners who are served by our food pantries. Pets are considered family members to many and when families are struggling with food insecurity, their pets are too. We recognize that it is important to keep these families together, especially as pets provide companionship, comfort, and hope in times of need. Offering resources like pet food and treats alongside food for the rest of the family offers hope that these important family members can stay at home where they belong.
