Founded in 1992, the St. Louis Internship Program (SLIP) has provided stable and consistent opportunities for underserved St. Louis high school students for over 20 years. Since 1992, over 98% of over 4,100 interns have graduated high school, with over 90% entering college education. The SLIP mission is to provide inspiration, support, professional development, and training to high school students with financial needs so they can obtain valuable internships in professional settings; to provide life skills for our students and alumni through year-round programming to position them for improved educational and, ultimately, full-time employment opportunities; and to provide our business partners with access to motivated, well-trained, talented employees, and to foster diversity within the workplace. SLIP internships are much more than just summer jobs. Eight-week paid summer internships are preceded by a guided application process and intensive work readiness training and followed by year-round college prep and peer and professional networking. SLIP’s Health Care Internship Component combines academic coaching and field experiences with summer internships in health facilities. The Patient Care Internship Component combines training in direct patient care with summer internships. The Pre-Internship Component addresses the high risk 9th grade year. A national model for community-based internships, SLIP has been replicated in 38 cities nationwide.

Thrilled to share that we successfully concluded the Boys and Girls Club summer enrichment at Maryville University! Helping to create this experience was particularly meaningful to me, as my first full time role out of high school was a Youth Development Professional with the Boys and Girls Club! This year, our students focused on college readiness as they prepare to join the St. Louis Internship Program. We also had some of our student leaders and campus partners participate in panels, presentations, and team-building activities, making the experience even more enriching. Thank you to everyone who contributed and special thanks to Whitney Henderson who went above and beyond behind the scenes to make this a memorable experience for the students! Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis St. Louis Internship (BGCSTL SLIP) has a successful track record of preparing youth for the workforce! Take a moment to read a SLIP member's story! SLIP story: Good morning Ms. Johnson, I hope all is well! I wanted to share some exciting news with you. Since your program has equipped me with invaluable lessons and skill sets, I couldn’t help but keep you in the loop of my college admissions process. Recently, I received acceptance to my dream school, Georgetown University. Initially, I was apprehensive about my chances at Georgetown due to my performance on standardized tests despite my impressive transcript, awards, and extracurriculars. However, I compensated for my low SAT score through an interview with Georgetown as part of my application, which I must say went extremely well. My interviewer concluded our session by stating that I was the most impressive and interesting interviewee she had ever encountered. Reflecting on this successful interview, I attribute it to the preparation I experienced through the St. Louis Internship Program. Although I applied to Georgetown for their early action decision round and was deferred, I remained hopeful because a delay is not a denial. In response to my deferred application, I demonstrated follow-through by submitting a continued interest letter to the Admissions Committee, expressing my continued deep interest in attending Georgetown. I am thrilled to share that my efforts paid off, and in addition to my acceptance, I have been offered the opportunity to take classes on campus during the summer, with all expenses covered including tuition, travel, room and board, and meal plan. Amidst this acceptance, I couldn’t help but reflect on the invaluable skill set that I learned from your amazing program. Thank you for your commitment to service the future. Zarria C

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis (BGCSTL) proudly announces the 2024 Women’s Leadership Table For Four honorees. Congratulations to Kierra Shipp, who captured the Dr. Joan Silber Award for Volunteerism and Leadership, and Kenneth Cunningham, who won the Dr. Flint Fowler and June McAllister Fowler Award. Both BGC St. Louis Internship Program/Teen Center of Excellence members are the honorees at the annual Table For Four Luncheon on April 11 and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. They did a tremendous job. Judges select the winner using an evenly weighted scale.
