The ALSAC workforce is made up of hundreds of people from all walks of life including veterans. In honor of Veterans Day, we chatted with a Navy vet and ALSAC employee to share some of his experiences. Meet Jason Heitman ?? Jason joined the Navy out of high school in July 2004 serving 4 years active duty aboard the USS Enterprise CVN-65 where he worked as an Aviation Boatswain's Mate on the aircraft carrier flight deck and an Engineman in Auxiliary Division. He received an Admiral Accommodation and a Navy-Marine Corp Achievement Medal during his enlistment. He was deployed in 2006 and 2007 in support of Operation Ending Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his 2006 deployment, Jason crossed the equator and earned the honorary title of "Shellback." Now, Jason manages creator initiatives under the St. Jude PLAY LIVE program and has been a part of the ALSAC team since August 2017. ?Can you describe specific skills or experiences from your time in the Navy that have directly influenced your role and contributions at ALSAC? "My desire to always be steadfast, the ability to work diligently in extreme and intense conditions, and my unwavering dedication to the mission of St. Jude can be traced back to my time in the US Navy. I was an Engineer for part of my service and I worked on an "old floating city" that faced some of the more hostile environments across the globe, which required a team to be incredibly nimble and able to navigate some of the toughest working conditions. My "shipmates" were counting on me to be at my very best and now researchers, doctors, nurses and families from around the world ask the same of me. I just feel, with the utmost conviction, it is my duty to do all I can, alongside the best and brightest the world has to offer, to ensure we keep Danny Thomas' dream alive!" ?What project are you looking forward to in the coming weeks? "It's always a special experience when we have St. Jude supporters on campus and the 7th annual "Build Against Cancer" livestream will be broadcast from the ALSAC studio from December 14-15! DrLupo, his friends and his community have contributed a significant part of their collective online existence in support of the St. Jude mission, to the tune of raising over $15M since 2018. Their emotion and drive for our mission is such a captivating experience, all while "organized chaos" occurs over two days of friendly competition!" To Jason and all of our veterans who help drive the St. Jude mission, thank you for your service. ????
