?? Exciting times ahead for the space industry in WA! Today, our team had the privilege of attending the launch of the WA Space Industry Strategy 2024-30 by Minister for Science, the Hon Stephen Dawson MLC and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation’s James Yuen at the WA Museum Boola Bardip. Members of the Binar Space Program team, the Curtin Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS), and the Space Science and Technology Centre at Curtin University were in attendance, and we were all so excited to see multiple case studies and recognition of the amazing work being done at Binar Space Program and the BinarX Student Payload Development Program WA high schools showcased in the report. Our team was eager to share the growth and innovation of the Binar Space Program since we launched WA’s first homegrown satellite, Binar-1 back in 2021. We brought along all the tech we could carry, from models showing the evolution of our highly advanced 1U CubeSats currently orbiting the earth carrying payloads from AVI Pty Ltd and CSIRO, to our own Daniel Turner’s award-winning MiniJet miniaturized propulsion system, to the Binar Payload Development Kits, which are the next step for the BinarX Student Payload Development Program high school students to further develop their own payloads for space flight on board future Binar missions! WEEK ONE RECAP: BINAR-2, 3 & 4 It’s been an exciting first week of operations since Binar-2, 3 and 4 were deployed from JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibō?module from the #InternationalSpaceStation! Our second mission is off to a strong start, and we’re thrilled to share some updates and new images. **Deployment Success:** Binar-2, 3 and 4 were deployed into orbit just over a week ago, marking a key milestone in our mission. Seeing our project in space is always an exhilarating moment! Thank you to JAXA for the beautiful images taken from the ISS, as well as photographer Ezra Alcantra for capturing the emotion in the room as we watched on from Curtin HIVE with our team present and past and members of the community. **Beacons Received:** We’ve been consistently receiving beacons from all 3 of our CubeSats, which is a great sign that everything is functioning as expected and that they are in good health! ?**Ground Station Tuning:** Our team, in collaboration with Benjamin Riley and Greg Cook at AVI Pty Ltd and the SatNOGS community, is currently fine-tuning our ground station to decode these beacons more effectively. This process builds upon the invaluable lessons learned from our first mission, helping us refine our systems and approach. Last week was the culmination of years of hard work, and easily the most fulfilling week of my career. While remaining silent over the last year and a half, I'm excited to finally share what I've been working on! As part of my PhD I've developed a patented spacecraft thruster for small satellites. The thruster uses novel materials and advanced manufacturing techniques and simulation to provide unprecedented thermal efficiency and miniaturisation. This is really important for small satellites which don't have much power or space available. Last week this invention was granted the Griffith Hack Overall Winner of the Curtinnovation Awards - a prestigious award that recognises and celebrates innovations that will have positive impacts on society.?To read more see Curtin University's media - https://lnkd.in/gxwTVCma. The following day, my first paper was published in Aerospace Journal, which details the development, testing and benefits of the thruster. For the icing on top, on Thursday night Binar 2, 3 and 4 (WA's second, third and fourth satellites) were deployed into space from the international space station. Within 40 minutes of deployment we established communication with all three satellites, marking a major milestone for us at the Binar Space Program! I want to extend my gratitude to my supervisors Phil Bland and Robert Howie and everyone at the Binar Space Program for their everlasting support. ?? Look to the skies! Curtin University’s Binar 2, 3 and 4 #satellites are now orbiting the Earth at 28,000km/h after a successful deployment from the International Space Station.
