Amazing dinner night last evening (2 December) at the SSPI Better Satellite World Award dinner event … a full room of Space and Satellite professionals filled the dinner hall at the Royal Guard Hotel in Westminster. Meeting and awarding three major companies for their contribution in space communications to communities around the world: Andre Jones , CEO Wansat Speedcast Hughes , Microsoft , Colombia MICT See, https://lnkd.in/gEKPK4J Also, the U.K. SSPI Chapter presented three nominees for the 2024 Personality of the year Award and although they were all very close in the voting ballot, David P. deservedly won this year’s award. Both runners up, Mark Boggett (Seraphim Space) and Antonio Franchi (European Space Agency - ESA) were recognised for their important nomination. A huge thanks goes to Tamara Bond-Williams and Louis Zacharilla for the amazing organization of the dinner, with the support of Tony Azzarelli, Irina Petrov, David Gilmore, Andrew Faiola, and as well as Matt Owen our SSPI European Liaison opening the ceremony, and to Elizabeth Evans and Andrew Faiola for coming on stage and presenting the awards to the winners … We thank the sponsors and participants to make this great evening happen. A great event last night at the Space Business Roundtable in London prepared by Space and Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) and Hogan Lovells, titled “Clearing out without getting cleared out: how can the UK commercial space sector can play a leading role in Space Sustainability.” The discussion highlighted experts opinion that space debris is a great threat to space missions and requires some innovative solution to reduce future pollution of outer space, while reminding that there exists quite a few threats from debris left in early space launch missions (eg, rocket boosters and spent satellites). The insurance view is that the current state of play is not a great concern, although there are opportunities stemming from protecting companies from 3rd party liability protection; although it seems that some 90% of space objects (lots of LEO cubesat types) are not insured by private entities, leaving the risk to launch states. The panel was calling for balanced regulations to control the further pollution of outer space. The panel of experts led by James Trevelyan (our SSPI international president) discussed issues and solution for space sustainability and what the UK should be doing about it. This in-person event aims to look into UKSA’s proposals, while also gathering diverse perspectives from across the space industry.
