The largest global network of young people dedicated to ending the War on Drugs

关于我们

Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is the largest global youth-led network dedicated to ending the War on Drugs. At its heart, SSDP is a grassroots organization, led by a Board of Directors primarily elected by and from our student and youth members. We bring young people of all political and ideological orientations together to have honest conversations about drugs and drug policy. We create change by providing a platform where members collaborate, communicate, share resources with, and coach each other to generate policy change, deliver honest drug education, and promote harm reduction. Founded in 1998, SSDP is comprised of thousands of members in hundreds of communities around the globe. https://ssdp.org/about/

Earlier this month the Boston University News Service featured #SSDP in their article "With mental health concerns on the rise, psychedelic drugs may be the answer" discussing how some states have become more aware of modern approaches to treating various ailments. We are proud of our chapter leaders like Maya Howler, education officer for Students for Sensible Drug Policy at the University of Washington who is using their voice for change. It's through honest dialogues and educational discussions that we can fight the stigma of plant medicines and push policy change. I am so unbelievably honored to have been a part of this team. For the past year, we have worked with the Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) and volunteered after work hours for a historical hearing against the DEA’s attempt to place two VITAL research tools, DOI and DOC, into Schedule I classification. These drugs have been foundational in neuroscience research for decades, and much of what we know about psychedelics and serotonin is because of the research access to them. Last week, we finally had our court hearing at the DEA headquarters and I am so proud of our effort. Our attorneys, Brett Phelps and Robert Rush volunteered an unbelievable amount of time to to this fight. We had an amazing team of scientists, many not featured in this photo because we had to split our time in court so that we could make it work with our research schedules. Elijah Ullman, PhD and Alaina Jaster led the way. Raul Ramos, Joseph Hennessey, and many other expert witnesses provided our expertise. The SSDP, policy, journalism, and media leaders were extraordinary, working overtime to bring this team together and advocate for sensible drug policy. Thank you Kat Murti, Gina Giorgio, Jack Gorsline, Jason Ortiz, Callie Hoffmann, J.D., and Hamilton Morris. This endeavor was a monumental effort for everyone involved, completely voluntary, and all for the benefit of research, medicine, and public health. Thank you to everyone involved and all who supported us!

Dr. Alaina Jaster and Dr. Raul Ramos, two of the brilliant scientists who spoke truth to power at the DEA in defense of scientific research this past week, were interviewed by The Microdose, an independent journalism newsletter brought to you by the?UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. Read the article for vignettes from SSDP’s historic ten-day court hearing with the DEA fighting to keep psychedelic research chemicals DOI & DOC legal, including surreal on-the-record testimony about Reddit, a furious DEA attorney, and a brilliant on-the-stand defense of decriminalizing all drugs. https://buff.ly/3Z3fsyN #researchmatters #startmakingsense #ssdp

The Historical hearing on the placement of the two most important research tool compounds for 5HT2 receptors, DOI and DOC is a wrap. Working with this brilliant team of scientists and attorneys as Chair of the Science Policy Committee for Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) has been the honor of a lifetime. I've learned an enormous number of skills and insights that'll carry me through the rest of my life: legal filings, legal analysis and research, policy analysis, courtroom dynamics, and how to successfully go from Proposed Rulemaking to Administrative Hearing. Students for Sensible Drug Policy is the home for all students looking to get involved with policy reform from the local to the national levels, and empowering them every step of the way. Jack Gorsline Alaina Jaster Robert Rush Brett Phelps Raul Ramos, Joseph Hennessy, Kat Murti Gina Giorgio, Hamilton Morris. Not pictured Tanner Anderson . This group is brilliant, extraordinarily dedicated to scientific and research integrity, advocacy, and scientific advancement. The whole process took an extraordinary amount of work from everyone and I couldn't have imagined a better, more cohesive and supportive team to work with.

Had the honor to join the Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) legal team as they finished their presentation of evidence in their hearing battling the DEA’s attempt to schedule the research chemicals DOC and DOI!All that’s left is closing arguments tomorrow morning and @brettjphelps is leading the charge. Big ups to Elijah Ullman, PhD Alaina Jaster for the amazing work by the SSDP research team. So many amazing SSDP students and alumni have come through like Tanner Anderson, Callie Hoffmann, J.D. Kat Murti Jack Gorsline It was WILD to see Brett Phelps actually up there cross examining the DEA on how the controlled substance act is absolutely not based in any scientific evidence whatsoever. It was a real treat to watch as the discussion around cannabis rescheduling picks up. Forever proof of my SSDP fam. This was yet another historically impactful action we’ve manifested, and it’s eternally rejuvenating to see brilliant people from diverse backgrounds come together time and again to fight for what we believe in. ??????

What a fun conversation! Thanks for featuring me and Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) in Tricycle Day, Henry Winslow

Henry: Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is currently challenging the DEA's plan to schedule DOI and DOC. Will you explain the significance of these two compounds and why SSDP is fighting the DEA? Kat: DOI and DOC are substances you probably wouldn't have heard of unless you work in psychedelic research, because they're not used recreationally. However, they've been used safely in labs since the 70s. There have been no arrests in the past five years, and the DEA has seized it outside labs fewer than 20 times. One of these substances, DOC, has become the de facto chemical used in labs to understand serotonin reuptake in our brains. Between these two compounds, there have been over 900 academic studies showing potential for treating anxiety, depression, opioid overdose, pain management, and more. The research suggests incredible potential to improve people's lives. But in 2022, the DEA suddenly announced they would be moving these substances to Schedule I, claiming they have no accepted medical value and high risk of abuse, which is absolutely wrong. We pushed back and demanded a hearing from the DEA. They dropped it, but then last year, during Christmas week, they announced again they were moving to Schedule I. We've secured a 10-day hearing in the DEA administrative court, but they're still playing games. Hours before the motion deadline, they tried to block our scientific witnesses from testifying about how DOI and DOC are being used, the lack of harm, and the medical applications. Our lawyers worked overtime to fight this, and fortunately, the DEA’s attempts to silence our witnesses were rejected. If these substances do get scheduled, researchers would need a Schedule I license to continue, which can be incredibly difficult and expensive. Labs would likely need to stop all research, reapply, and get individual approval for each study. You're basically saying this research isn't going to happen anymore. And think about the decades of research already done. It essentially gets scrapped because if you criminalize these substances, you can't recreate those experiments or use what's been learned to create new treatments. And for what? There's no proof of diversion, no arrests, no recreational use. The DEA knows they have no case. They're just hoping no one notices what they're doing.
