Thirty years ago, on November 18, 1994, The Rolling Stones made history by becoming the first major band to livestream a concert. Though before their iconic event, a lesser-known rock band, Severe Tire Damage (STD), had already made history by performing the first-ever live stream over the internet. From the balcony of the Xerox PARC building (now part of SRI), STD's live stream marked a pivotal moment, demonstrating the internet's power to connect artists and audiences globally.

Today marks nearly 55 years since the first message was sent over ARPANET, the precursor to today’s internet. SRI hosted one of the four original network nodes, along with UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah. The very first transmission on the ARPANET was on October 29, 1969 – it was a logon from UCLA to SRI. By 1972, the ARPANET comprised 37 computers. “The ARPANET story reminds us that true innovation often requires patience and collaboration. Moving from those initial four nodes to today's billions of connected devices didn't happen overnight. It took years of work by researchers across multiple institutions. As we face today's grand challenges – from climate change to cybersecurity – the lesson about the power of sustained, collaborative research becomes even more relevant.” - David Parekh, CEO of SRI
