We asked employees to share why community service is important to them. Here's a community service spotlight on Dave, senior program manager, from our Syracuse office. Everyone has exactly 24 hours every day to make an impact on their family, personal growth, career, as well as their community. Community service dedicates a portion of that precious time to give back to others, often strangers, to make one's community a better place. After a long career in the U.S. Air Force where volunteering and community service are highly emphasized, I continue to look for avenues in my civilian life to help make my community a better place. I find that community service often returns dividends much greater than the time you put into it. It is both rewarding for the community and personally fulfilling for me to invest my time and efforts in a cause that I find beneficial for my community. In the past, I have devoted a great deal of my time to a variety of organizations. I have been a volunteer firefighter, a Scoutmaster of a Boy Scout Troop and held various roles with Rotary International. Currently, I work with the Veteran Golfers Association. I discovered the VGA a little over a year ago and was instantly attracted to their mission: to enrich “the lives of veterans and their family members through the camaraderie and sportsmanship of golf.” Golf is one of my favorite hobbies and being able to serve as the VGA's assistant state director in Utah is the perfect synergy of that hobby and helping an organization serve veterans and their families. Tragically, more than 17 veterans died by suicide every single day in 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs’ 2023 National Veteran Suicide Prevention annual report. The transition from the military to civilian life can be a struggle that's amplified by a lack of community. The esprit de corps found in the military is often hard to replicate, but the VGA aims to provide a sense of community and camaraderie to hopefully reduce the number of veteran suicides. Reflecting on my volunteer experiences since joining SRC, I find it a challenge to pick one situation that stands out the most. I think the most memorable, or most fulfilling experience, was every time I got to hold a Court of Honor and award the rank of Eagle Scout. In my tenure, I was privileged to award the rank of Eagle Scout to over 20 young men. That is a massive accomplishment for those young men and defies statistics — youth are often drawn away from completing the long path to Eagle Scout by other competing interests. Continued in comments. ??
