And just like that, the Reserve Bank (RBNZ) has dropped it like it's hot — cutting the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by a full 0.50%. A great start to 2025, if you ask us! But the real eyebrow-raiser? The RBNZ is now targeting a 'neutral' OCR of around 3.00% by late 2025, which is a whole lot sooner than its previous mid- to late-2026 prediction. Read our latest newsletter for the full scoop ?? ??

Dave Thomson, a self-employed carpenter, saw potential where others saw problems. What started as a simple move to the countryside for Dave and his wife, turned into something bigger: breathing new life into three relocatable homes on a stunning block of Kaipara land. Not every property development starts with a grand plan. Some, like this one, happen completely by accident. Financing the project was the real challenge. Traditional banks weren’t keen (surprise, surprise). Being self-employed meant Dave didn’t fit their rigid lending criteria — until he found Squirrel. With the right funding, a solid vision, and a whole lot of elbow grease, this "accidental" development turned into something pretty special. Proof that with the right support, great ideas don’t have to stay on the drawing board. Curious how he made it work? How do you feel about three of NZ's largest banks (ANZ Aotearoa, ASB Bank, Westpac New Zealand) taking more than 60% of the interest they make on simple savings accounts to their own revenue lines and leaving NZ consumers and SMEs with less than 40%? I've made some estimates in the blog below that suggest there could be $9b held in those simple savings accounts across those three banks, which means they're collectively pulling $245m annually for themselves and giving $138m to their savers. If Kiwi shifted those savings to other providers with higher interest rates and lower margins (like Squirrel), there is a whole lot more money for savers. Once again using the estimates, consumers and SMEs would collectively earn $360m annually - MORE THAN DOUBLE! The competition is here, Kiwi, get off your backsides and do something about it. https://lnkd.in/gv_-naaE

If wholesale market pricing is accurate, the OCR will be down at 3.25% by September, which will likely see mortgage rates for terms out to two years drop to sub-5%.? That will put about $4 billion back in homeowners’ pockets. What's the best strategy for borrowers, and savers?
