Spurlock is excited to announce the Grand Re-Opening of Children’s Park in downtown San Diego!
On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, and community leaders and city staff cut the ribbon to reopen San Diego’s Children’s Park.
The improvements to the park include a large children’s play area with play equipment, an off-leash dog run, an exercise area for adults, game tables, a vendor building with covered outdoor seating, and a new walkway that engages with the Civic Pond.
In 2018, Spurlock was selected by Civic San Diego (now Civic Communities) to implement the General Development Plan (prepared by Schmidt Design Group) for the park project. The improvements to the park have been in the works for several years by Downtown and City leaders. The GDP called for a thinning of the Canary Island Pine grove and removal of a dense double row of Italian Cypress trees to increase visibility in and out of the park. The Civic Pond remains intact but has been resurfaced to mitigate the impacts of the elevated walkway and to refresh the pond’s identity. Building upon the park’s artistic expression, a San Diego-based artist, Miki Iwasaki, was retained to design and integrate public art into the project.
Children’s Park has been an iconic component of the downtown open space since its construction in 1996. This 2.1-acre park, adjacent to the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade in San Diego’s Marina District, was created as the collaborative design effort of landscape architects Martha Schwartz and Peter Walker beginning in 1987. The park helped serve as an early transformation for Downtown San Diego.
The demographics of downtown have changed and evolved over the past three decades, including the needs and demands for how people view and interact with public spaces. With projections for downtown populations set to reach upwards of 70,000 by 2050, the role of creating dynamic open spaces to meet the growing population is critical, especially in these significantly densifying neighborhoods where parks and public spaces serve as the social back yards for many residents, employees, and visitors to our city. Meeting the needs of each of these different user groups will be critical as downtown continues to evolve and redefine itself for the next 30+ years.
We look forward to experiencing the park’s success and are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with this amazing Team!
