What is the state of San Francisco? How are we Spatially and Socially? How are we Physically and Metaphysically? What do we, as a City, have to celebrate? What are we looking forward to? What work are we most urgently advancing? And what efforts do we need to redouble? This interdisciplinary panel session extends the conversation on Architecture and the City to incorporate Landscape and Urban Design perspectives, as well as Physical Planning, Policy and Community Advocacy. The program progresses a broad vision for the Center for Architecture + Design, San Francisco — one that advances Design Thinking toward its most expansive and inclusive horizon. Join Center for Architecture + Design, San Francisco Board Chair and city planner, Allison Albericci, in conversation with landscape architect Patricia Algara, urban designer Geeti Silwal, policy expert Sujata Srivastava, architect Julia Weatherspoon, and artist/activist Ramona Laughing Brook Webb. https://lnkd.in/giDFmC7W

I am looking forward to participating in a Comparative Urbanism: Learning from Jakarta event tomorrow August 23rd at SPUR with University of San Francisco (https://lnkd.in/dAWBnpW7) with a great group of colleagues and co-panelists organized by John Zarobell. I had the pleasure of visiting #Jakarta in January 2023 as part of a University of San Francisco student trip and learning exchange with Universitas Tarumanagara (attached are some photos from that trip). This event tomorrow is a continuation of that work and includes Regina Suryadjaja Nadia ayu lestari and Kemal Taruc. There’s a long history of “learning from” trips and conferences where practitioners across cities compare notes and share approaches. At SPUR we would regularly visit cities throughout the world to meet with practitioners and bring lessons back to apply regionally (See: https://lnkd.in/dTDVZccf). At first glance, the #SanFrancisco #BayArea and #Jakarta, #Indonesia are obviously different — in size and scale, form, and economy. The Bay Area’s population hasn’t yet hit 8 million while Jakarta is the world second largest urban region (>35 million), just behind #Tokyo. Yet, as we will see on Friday, there are indeed opportunities for learning and sharing - Jakarta is well-known for its successful bus rapid transit system - the first #BRT system in Southeast Asia (albeit in a region like the Bay Area still largely dominated by the car). The city is sinking and facing rising seas. And in part to respond to #sealevelrise (as well as to spread economic opportunity) the region and nation are embracing new cities, including a new national capital on an adjacent island (Borneo) and several new towns on the edges of Jakarta. If you’re around #downtownSanFrancisco, join us tomorrow from 1 to 5pm for the event and discussion. Panelists include: Abby Thorne-Lyman Keally McBride Margot Rose Lederer Benjamin Grant Brian Jencek Ned Resnikoff Mitchell Schwarzer Grace Jiyun Lee John Zarobell Adrienne Johnson Tanu Sankalia Pedro Lange-Churión https://lnkd.in/dAWBnpW7

For more information about attending or sponsoring the Silver SPUR Awards, visit spur.org/silverspur More about Senator Scott Wiener: Elected to represent San Francisco and northern San Mateo County in the California State Senate in 2016, Senator Wiener's leadership and tireless efforts to address critical state issues in housing, transportation, civil rights, criminal justice reform, clean energy, and poverty alleviation exemplify the qualities of a Silver SPUR Honoree. Senator Wiener chairs the Senate Budget Committee and is Co-Chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus. He is a past Chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus and the Senate Housing Committee. Before his election to the Senate, Senator Wiener served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing the district previously represented by Harvey Milk. He also chaired the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. Before taking public office, Senator Wiener practiced law for fifteen years, including nearly a decade as a Deputy City Attorney in the San Francisco City Attorney's Office. Have you ever worked somewhere for a decade, left that place, had some time to reflect and rest, and then get to interview all your old coworkers and support the writing of a report on what could be done to improve that place? I have! Dream project. So grateful to get to partner with the Controller's Office of the real world in SPUR. Alicia John-Baptiste is still a great leader just like she was back in the day when she was Chief of Staff at MTA and I was a policy analyst supporting her work on the Transportation Task Force 2030. Grateful to have gotten to know the wonderful, smart, and collaborative Sarah Karlinsky and Nicole Neditch through this project. And of course grateful to the EQ team and getting to work with other CCSF experts in Marisa Pereira Tully and Sami Iwata. I wish the CCSF all the best and hope to see many of these recommendations implemented. I know there are still so many wonderful, hard working folks there and I'm so appreciative many of them were willing to speak to us for this scope of work. All policy nerd friends - check this report out! #goodgovernment #eqcollab
