One of the biggest challenges with Streptococcus agalactiae Ia2021 in LATAM is the extremely low survival rates from larvae to juveniles—some producers report survivals as low as 30%. I have witnessed firsthand the efforts of leading companies in the industry working to find solutions, from vaccines and feed additives to improved genetics, like the work we do at Spring Genetics pioneers in the selection for higher resistance to Streptococcus agalactiae IA2021. While these advancements are crucial, they are only part of the solution. There must also be a shift in how producers manage fingerling and juvenile production. Implementing biosecure areas before vaccination and transfer to grow-out systems is key to improving survival rates. Strengthening biosecurity protocols at this stage will maximize the benefits of genetic improvements and health programs.
