As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we can’t help but think of the women who have changed and are changing the world of sports. These fearless women are found in every space, defying the voices who told them they couldn’t succeed. We thank the women who have paved the way. These are some of their stories!

Seven years ago I was a bright eyed intern for a professional sports team. I was in the truck assisting with graphics holding deeply onto the hope that work behind the camera would one day lead me to work in front of the camera; get the coffee, cut the highlights, keep track of stats and maybe one day, the broadcast job could be mine. On the monitor was our team’s sideline reporter, a woman I looked up to in every way. She was practicing her questions before our pre-game show. “Her questions are always so stupid,” the man next to me muttered. What I saw next was a domino effect, multiple people in the truck agreed, laughing in-between comments about her “lack of basketball IQ.” They were wrong, of course. And I sat there for the rest of the game rethinking my dream job. Did I really want to work so hard to be criticized by men on their couch for my whole career? Will I ever know enough to be considered worthy? I reference this moment often, because it changed everything for me. It was on my drive home that night that I started to dream of a new type of community of sports fans- one where no woman ever felt less than, or they didn’t know enough, or they weren’t taken seriously. That community became Sportsish. Happy National Girls and Women in sports day to anyone who has ever played sports, worked in sports or even just likes sports. You belong here.
