We will be at the Emerald Valley Development Professionals (EVDP) Volunteer Fair on February 11th from 4pm-6pm. We hope to see you there! We are currently looking for more volunteer mentors. Volunteering as a mentor is a great opportunity to give back and make a difference for formerly incarcerated individuals while meeting new friends along the way. Here are some of the highlights: -Mentoring is a low time commitment, requiring only about four hours per month for three months at a time, and it is highly rewarding. -No mentoring experience is required – this is all about building connections and having fun! -We match folks based on shared interests, and they decide together what fun activities they want to do - which we pay for, up to $100 per match. Learn more about becoming a volunteer mentor on our website or stop by our table at the volunteer fair on February 11th! https://lnkd.in/gwDw3dET

This year, in addition to the annual Jeffrey Shervey award, we awarded the very first Sister Janice Jackson Founder's Award! This award, created in honor of our late founder, celebrates a Sponsors staff member who demonstrates dignity to all and promotes positive change at Sponsors and in the community at large. The winner of this award is our amazing team member, Marcus Humphrey! One of his colleagues shared, "Marcus consistently goes above and beyond for all Sponsors participants. Between facilitating classes, helping participants establish healthcare and Social Security, transporting participants to various appointments, assisting them in getting necessary medication, leading a recovery group, working with participants to create relapse prevention plans, Marcus consistently goes out of his way to provide participants with the care and services they need -- even if that means being the last to leave in the evening -- and doing it all while treating participants with dignity and respect." Thank you for all you do, Marcus! We are so lucky to have you on the Sponsors team.

Every year, we honor one Sponsors staff member with the Jeffrey Shervey Spirit Award. This year's winner is Travis Johannes! The Jeffrey Shervey Spirit Award honors an employee who demonstrates outstanding dedication and service to the Sponsors community, collaboration, integrity, kindness, and humility. One colleague shared, "Travis is often seen wearing a T-shirt promoting kindness or positivity. However, it is very clear from his cheerful smile, quirky sense of humor, and the caring conversations he has with participants that kindness and positivity are part of Travis' character. He does not hesitate to offer a hand of assistance to someone struggling to carry boxes, open a door for someone, or provide a word of encouragement when he sees an opportunity. " Way to go, Travis! We are so grateful that you are a part of the Sponsors team. #JusticeReimagined #RememberThoseInPrison #SecondChances #Reentry #AwardWinner

Researchers from Penn State University and UC Irvine ask: How do formerly incarcerated individuals navigate community reentry? An upcoming study aims to answer this question through the use of interviews and social network analysis. Data about reentry can help to inform reentry programs and services; we are looking forward to seeing the results and insights that result from this study. We are so grateful for our partnership with UO Prison Education Program! For many folks leaving incarceration, learning to use new technology can be a significant barrier to accessing housing, employment, benefits, and more. UO PEP interns make a huge difference to program participants who benefit from their support! #JusticeReimagined
