Wine made from the same cultivar but two different names, Syrah and Shiraz.?Why two names? The grape was made popular in the Rhone region of France under the name Syrah. When vine clippings were planted in the New World by settlers back in the early 1800’s the name Shiraz popped up in the southern hemisphere regions like Australia and South Africa. These regions were warmer and had richer soils than the Old-World regions in France and resulted in a different style wine. More fruit forward, expressive and rounder, softer tannins versus the more nuanced, constrained style Syrah from the Old-World regions that had darker more complex fruit flavors and more prominent tannins.
