#PatriotDay ???? STA's first "flag bus" was a powerful symbol of resilience and patriotism. Born out of the grief following the September 11 attacks, the American flag bus wrap has become an enduring icon of Spokane’s public transit system. The journey of this rolling tribute began with Bus 9703, a 1997 New Flyer model. It was the brainchild of STA’s Body Shop team under the guidance of Ron and Don Scouton, and Jeff Smith, the current Body Shop Foreman. “The original intent was to commemorate the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks,” said Vehicle Maintenance Analyst Brian Conley, who’s known as the department’s resident historian. “It was a way to channel our community’s grief and honor the victims.” The significance of the flag bus was immediate. “When they finished the bus and it first pulled up to the Plaza, people were cheering and clapping,” Conley said. “It was a moment of collective emotion — a small but meaningful way to heal.”
