ON-SITE SCIENCE: Last Friday during our Professional Learning Improvement Day (PLID), elementary Science specialists took their learning outdoors with a field trip to Manito Park to consider instructional activities they could recreate with their students. The energetic educators explored the park, considered instructional strategies to facilitate learning activities, and brainstormed about how they could take their own students to local parks to engage in this type of learning. We’re excited to see SPS students out and about on more field trips this year, whether it’s a walk to a neighborhood park or a Spokane Transit ride across the city! In case you missed it, check out Linwood Elementary’s field trip to Manito Park: https://lnkd.in/gAckFcr9 #EngageIRL

FAMILIA: “He has both languages, which is important for us so he does not lose the tradition of Spanish.” Seventh grade student Alex Moreno has attended our dual language school since kindergarten. Enrolling at Ruben Trejo Dual Language Academy helped Alex and his three siblings learn English while reinforcing the language he speaks at home with his parents, Maria and Juan. We love hearing stories from families about educational opportunities that strength cultural heritage and a student's sense of self. Thank you to the Morenos for sharing their experience with us during Hispanic Heritage Month.

SEEN HEARD VALUED: Yesterday, more than 700 Yasuhara Middle School students and staff gathered in their gym to receive new, inspirational sweatshirts, donated by the Hifumi En Society. The local nonprofit was founded in the 1960s by Denny Yasuhara – a longtime SPS educator and the namesake of the middle school that opened in 2022 – and other members of the Japanese American community in the Spokane area to support the social welfare of their community and celebrate and preserve Japanese cultural awareness, education, and history. The Hifumi En Society has been active in support the Yasuhara school community in honor of Denny’s legacy, and several Society members were thanked by Principal Stephanie Lundberg for their generosity during the assembly. Thank you for providing these sweatshirts that Phoenix can wear with pride!

SPS EXTRA: “I really loved football when I was a kid.” While North Central High School junior Trevelle Jones may still be considered “a kid” by some, he’s been playing some sort of football since kindergarten. Honing his skills on the field for a decade have made him a better player, teammate, and leader in his role as Wolfpack quarterback this year. In October’s episode of SPS Extra – dropping Oct. 17 – Stephanie Splater and Nicole Hernandez discuss why early engagement in extracurriculars is so important, and why we want elementary and middle school students to connect with activities that fuel their passions. Make sure you’re subscribed to “SPS Podcasts” wherever you listen to podcasts, or tune in @ spokaneschools.org/listen. #EngageIRL
