The recently published study, "Medicare Service Use and Expenditures Across Physician Practice Affiliation Models," commissioned by American Independent Medical Practice Association (AIMPA) and conducted by Avalere, included key insights such as: Hospital-Driven Consolidation: In 2022, only 6% of physicians across the five specialties Avalere studied were affiliated with private equity. Thirty-seven percent were affiliated with corporate entities, and 45% were affiliated with hospitals. We're proud to share the results of a groundbreaking new study, "Medicare Service Use and Expenditures Across Physician Practice Affiliation Models," commissioned by the American Independent Medical Practice Association (AIMPA) and conducted by Avalere. The study reveals significant insights which reinforce what independent physicians have long known. We deliver high-quality care at a lower cost. And partnerships with private equity-backed management services organizations can enhance our ability to do so. Policymakers and industry leaders must recognize the value that independent physician practices —including those affiliated with PE-backed MSOs—bring to our healthcare system. Key findings include: High-Quality Care: Medicare beneficiaries in private equity-affiliated private practices had, on average, 13.5% fewer days in the hospital and 7.9% fewer visits to the emergency department in 2022 than similar patients of hospital-affiliated physicians. One of the latest advancements in sports medicine involves an all arthroscopic technique for matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI? Treatment), developed by Dr. Michael Kuhn, a sports medicine surgeon at Middlesex Orthopedic & Spine Associates. This procedure addresses cartilage damage in the knee, a condition that can progress if left untreated. Unlike traditional open surgeries, Dr. Kuhn's minimally invasive approach facilitates earlier range of motion, reduces post-operative complications such as pain and stiffness, and leads to improved clinical outcomes. Further, Dr. Kuhn has contributed to the research and development of new surgical tools (MACI Arthro), which received FDA approval in August 2024. This approval expands the availability of the procedure to patients nationwide, benefiting individuals aged 18 to 55 with cartilage injuries in the knee.
