Another year has come to an end, but Don't Stop Us Now: #PhotonicsWest is traveling at the speed of light, just weeks away. While we are Under Pressure to bring you the best event yet, we wanted to take time to re-introduce you to the four rockstars who make up the 2025 SPIE presidential chain: President Peter de Groot, President-Elect Julie Bentley, Vice President Cather Simpson, and Immediate Past President Jennifer Barton. ?? Be sure to say hello to these Cool Cats if you see them around the Moscone Center in San Francisco! ??

Stefan Seelecke of Universit?t des Saarlandes will take the plenary stage at #SPIEsmart to present on elastocalorics! "Elastocalorics is an innovative, disruptive heating and cooling technology that - due to its high energy efficiency and absolute climate friendliness - has been declared as the most promising alternative to existing vapor compression technologies by the EU Commission and the US Department of Energy." At #SPIElitho, industry leaders from ASML and IBM discussed the future of lithography in the context of AI and quantum computing. Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, emphasized the need for a holistic approach to meet the growing demands of AI, highlighting innovations like in-memory computing and more efficient semiconductor architectures that could significantly reduce power consumption. Nelson Felix, Director of Technical Business Development at IBM, added that stacking transistors in 3D and improving patterning processes could enhance computing performance, addressing the massive AI demand. However, he noted that quantum computing will play a crucial role in solving problems beyond the capabilities of classical computers, like factoring large numbers, which is key to modern encryption. The growing demand for AI and data centers is driving increased emissions and environmental impacts. At #SPIElitho, Emily Gallagher from imec discussed how the #semiconductor industry can address sustainability by reducing harmful gases, recycling materials, and improving chip yields. ?? However, as Laurent Pain from CEA-Leti pointed out, sustainability requires a holistic approach that goes beyond power consumption to include water use, material waste, and regulatory compliance. ?? High-NA EUV is taking center stage at #SPIElitho as the industry pushes beyond 0.33 NA to 0.55, and even has 0.75 hyper-NA on the horizon! Higher NA enables finer feature resolution without excessive multipatterning. High-NA EUV can slash process steps fourfold, simplifying overlay and reducing variability. But it’s not without challenges, shallower depth of focus and smaller field sizes mean tighter process control is a must. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gYpHWRUn

Tuesday recap:?#SPIElitho?edition! ? We started the day with a plenary presentation from Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, on scaling EUV and holistic lithography to support Moore's Law through the AI era. Heike Riel of IBM was unable to present due to travel issues; however, in true collaborative spirit, her colleague Nelson Felix stepped in to deliver the plenary, "Quantum Computing and AI: Making it Work," on her behalf. The day also brought plenty of networking opportunities and the start of the exhibition. Attendees had a chance to connect and share experiences at the?#WomenInOptics?lunch and mingle at the?#SPIE_JM3?Editors Reception. We hope you have enjoyed the week thus far at?#SPIElitho! Let us know your favorite moment below. ??
