This is going to be an insane partnership. The recent Bybit breach shows that attackers don’t need to steal private keys. They just need to trick people into signing the wrong transaction. Per Bybit’s CEO, “[it] appears that this specific transaction was m[a]sked, all the signers saw the m[a]sked UI which showed the correct address and the URL was from @safe . However the signing message was to change the smart contract logic of our ETH cold wallet. This resulted Hacker took control of the specific ETH cold wallet we signed and transfered all ETH in the cold wallet to this unidentified address.” Here are recommendations for preventing this type of attack: 1. Lock Down Signing Devices ? Air-gapped environments prevent malware from reaching private keys. ? Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) store keys in a tamper-proof, offline device, so even compromised signers can’t leak them. ? Hardware wallet screens and biometric verification help signers catch UI manipulation before approving transactions. 2. Strengthen Transaction Verification ? Mainnet parameter checks catch smart contract tampering. ? Independent blockchain explorer reviews expose UI spoofing attempts. ? Hardware wallet confirmations and AI-driven signer verification add an extra layer of protection. ? Smart contract simulations let teams see what will happen before they approve. ? Out-of-band approvals adds extra security to avoid getting tricked by a manipulated interface. 3. Multisig Security ? Separate signers geographically and organizationally so a single attack can’t compromise them all. ? Rotate keys regularly to reduce the risk of long-term exposure. ? Enforce transaction limits in hardware so high-value transfers require extra scrutiny. ? Time-lock high-value transactions so teams have a chance to intervene. ? Instant signer revocation stops compromised users from approving anything else. 4. Monitor and Respond in Real Time ? Behavior-based transaction analysis detects unusual approval patterns. ? Smart contract monitoring flags unauthorized changes before they’re executed. ? AI-powered anomaly detection helps catch threats before assets move. ? Automated alerts and transaction holds give teams time to react. ? Emergency governance freezes provide a last line of defense. 5. Be Ready for the Worst ? Smart contract time-locks and automated blocking stop transactions mid-flight. ? Pre-deployed recovery contracts make it possible to reclaim assets. ? Red team attack simulations help teams stay sharp against new threats. ? Custody failover plans allow for fast asset reallocation if a breach happens. Multisig or cold storage doesn’t guarantee safety. Attackers are getting smarter, targeting the approval process itself. We need layered security so no single failure can lead to disaster.
