We had another amazing STEAR Circle session this week! “Counseling: How to Engage Clients as People,” presented by Ally of Stuttering? Daniel Shaw, MS, CCC-SLP, from Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center. Daniel led the discussion on the SLP as counselor, and how counseling shapes therapeutic relationships, informs what we target, and teaches clients to teach themselves. He shared about Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and introduced us briefly to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. His experience and expertise helped our STEAR Circle members better grasp the importance of understanding that our clients know themselves best, and with support can chart their own path (solution) forward. Exciting discussions at our third virtual brown bag lunch as colleagues shared creative teaching approaches in stuttering education! ?? Caroline Brinkert, MS, CCC-SLP shared how she's leveraging AI to enhance clinical training. Her students engage in realistic client-clinician scenarios using GPTs, allowing them to practice therapeutic responses, build confidence before working with clients, and develop clinical reasoning skills in a safe learning environment. ?? Katerina Ntourou, PhD, CCC-SLP shared an experiential assignment exploring the process of change. Students examined their own experiences with change—identifying barriers and facilitators in the process. These personal insights deepen students' understanding of the complex factors influencing their future clients' therapeutic progress. We asked Victoria how she became interested in working with people who stutter: "I knew I found my life calling one day in 2013, when I observed my very first stuttering therapy session with a Board Certified Specialist in Stuttering. During the session, she asked the client who stuttered where he felt better, and I watched him slowly bring his hand up to his chest. Since that moment, I knew there was something vastly different about the impact of working with individuals who stutter, and I wanted to learn everything about how to be a part of it. Stuttering work is more than just speech therapy; it is about connecting with your clients to the point where you help them connect with the world." What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering? Seal mean to Victoria? "Becoming an Ally of Stuttering? is a promise to not just stand with people who stutter, but to stand up for them. It is a promise to advocate, educate, and provide support in a stutter-affirming and evidence-based way, despite all of the difficult conversations that come along with it.
