Family-centered caregiver-directed treatment is DIRECT treatment! ???????? Our newest blog article dives into this idea, as Spero President Ana Paula Mumy looks at caregiver-directed treatment with a fresh perspective: “The deeper my understanding of stuttering grows, the more I understand the crucial role parents and caregivers play in the quality of life of children who stutter. This understanding has also sharpened my focus on the direct role of the speech-language therapist in equipping parents and caregivers. As a result, I’ve begun to question the traditional dichotomy between direct versus indirect treatment in stuttering for young children who stutter.” Her conclusion? A caregiver-directed approach focused on their own growth and the communication environment, not on the child stuttering less, is direct intervention because caregivers are the most influential and constant adult presence in a child's life. The intentional engagement of caregivers in the therapeutic process–cultivating family strengths and fostering positive changes in caregiver behaviors and values–constitutes direct treatment. What might holistic stuttering therapy goals look like? Instead of "fixing" stuttering, we can empower individuals to communicate effectively and confidently, embrace challenges, and grow from their experiences. As SLPs, when engaging in holistic intervention, we shift our focus to: ? Building self-awareness and understanding ? Strengthening social aspects of communication ? Increasing communication confidence and participation ? Encouraging self-advocacy ? Developing resilience and growth ? Providing supportive environments for stuttering By focusing on these goals, we help individuals who stutter to increase ease of communication and say exactly what they want to say, regardless of stuttering. When we move away from behavioral goals that only address the visible signs of stuttering, we can approach stuttering with quality of life at the center of our work. >> Find the full PDF resource on our site! << #SpeechTherapist #Stuttering #Stutter #SperoStuttering #AllyOfStuttering #SLPTraining #SpeechTherapy #CommunicationDisorders #SchoolSLP #PediatricSpeechTherapy #SpeechAndLanguage

When schools use outdated criteria for eligibility, students who stutter suffer. The old criteria focused on: ? Counting disfluencies ? Visible discrepancies in speech ? Academic performance But these criteria put an emphasis on fluency rather than taking into account the entire lived experience of the student. That leads to bigger issues. Instead, schools need to adopt new standards for evaluations that take into account: ? Tense-filled disfluencies ? Maladaptive coping mechanisms ? Emotional responses ? Social and educational participation ? Activity limitations ? Quality of life impact By increasing the scope of eligibility criteria, our schools can better serve students who stutter in ways that support them in all aspects of their education. Remember: not everything that counts can be counted. Meet Sullivan Kiley, MS, CCC-SLP! We asked Sullivan how he became interested in working with people who stutter: "My interest in working with people who stutter stems from my fascination of neuroscience, coupled with my experience as a meditator and mindfulness facilitator. Early on in college I discovered the impact that counseling, meditation, and other emotion-regulating strategies can have on fluency, and I became hooked on learning more and extending this knowledge to help others." What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering? Seal mean to Sullivan? "I chose to become an Ally of Stuttering? SLP as community is so important to collaboration, growth, and support. Adding to the stuttering community improves outreach and helps families get connected with resources." It’s hard to believe that it was already a year ago when we filmed our newest caregiver resource with John Gomez! ?? All of our SLPs from “Nurturing and Empowering Your Child Who Stutters” got to have a virtual reunion this week, and we had time to reflect on what this project meant to us, as well as the impact it has had on the stuttering community. As of today, the film has more than 2,400 views on our YouTube channel, with so many positive comments to encourage us as we spread awareness of stuttering and support caregivers! ?? We at Spero can’t thank you enough for watching this resource and sharing it with people who need it!
