A great new post from our program officer at the The National Institutes of Health: https://lnkd.in/gne6iSKj ?? "The breadth, complexity and severity of the opioid crisis calls for innovative solutions. Medical devices hold the promise of being part of the solution to help mitigate the impact of the opioid crisis. Meaningful progress can be accomplished if the community works together to ensure that resources are effectively used to develop novel solutions, regulatory and reimbursement expectations are understood and successfully addressed and, most importantly, new solutions proposed are effectively adopted by the diverse patient population living with OUD."

A systematic review in 2019 (https://lnkd.in/gXR3Tgt6) looked at 299 studies regarding the effectiveness of distraction as a procedural pain intervention for pediatric cancer patients and concluded that distraction is a promising intervention. What needs to be done next is to explore effectiveness in varied populations and evidence of cultural influences on pain expression. We’ve been working on those very things! We’ve focused on Hispanic populations and have two studies currently running with the NIH: https://lnkd.in/gcpFB9h3 #pediatricpain #distractiontherapy #NIHresearch

Catching up on some healthcare podcasts and came across the podcast series “Patient No More” from NRC Health. The February 27, 2024 episode was with Dr. Lazarus (pediatric emergency med) and was entitled “Wait times, empathy and enhancing patient experience”. A great episode with some really poignant points about the family experience. Great quote: “When I was younger, I really thought empathy was…a gift that you were given. And if you were empathetic that’s great. And if not, that’s just not you. But something I’ve learned is that empathy can be cognitive. So it is something that can be taught.” Worth a listen! https://lnkd.in/egPPG2kU #pediatrics #patientexperience

It's impossible to capture the contributions of nurses in a social media post. But if you've ever been hospitalized, sick, vulnerable or had a family member in the care of a nurse, you know. American Nurses Association accepts donations to thank nurses during nursing week. Please consider donating! #nursesweek?#nurses?#gratitude https://lnkd.in/e979xpSu
