During Black History Month we asked our teammates to reflect on what this means to them. Spectrum Pharmacy Products Quality Document Specialist Marieta Thuku states that as a young African-born woman, she has navigated the challenges of pursuing education, building a career, and raising a family, all while standing on the shoulders of those who fought for the opportunities she now has. Black History Month is more than a celebration, it is a call to action--a reminder of the resilience, sacrifices, and brilliance that have shaped history. It demands that we not only honor the past but actively dismantle barriers that still exist today. Marieta deeply admires Dr. Marie Maynard Daly, the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry, whose groundbreaking research in cardiovascular health shattered racial and gender barriers in STEM. While workplace diversity initiatives are a step forward, true progress must be made through relentless mentorship, leadership representation, and cultural awareness which cannot be confined to February. Black voices must not only be acknowledged but amplified, empowered, and embedded in every space where decisions are made. During Black History Month we asked our teammates to reflect on what this means to them. Spectrum Pharmacy Products Customer Service Supervisor Nicole Quinlan Lee reflects on her mom and her hero, Ella Quinlan. Born in 1945, she lived through Jim Crow, the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements, and persevered through every challenge. After Ella’s divorce, she moved to California with little money and two kids, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees while raising Nicole and her brother. She became one of LA’s few Black female sheriffs, rare at the time, and later, a teacher, polygraph examiner, and mediator. She taught her family the power of resilience, knowledge, and giving back to our community. Because of her, Nicole does not let the impossible, or others, define her worth. Ella Quinlan’s presence in this world has made it a better place to be in.?She is the perfect example of greatness that many people regardless of culture or gender can relate to. Kofi believes that companies must champion fairness, break down barriers, and implement policies that truly reflect their values drive a successful culture based in growth for all. Spectrum embodies this vision by embracing diversity at its core. As we celebrate Black History Month, Kofi would like to honor his personal hero, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister, who fought for African unity and independence. His leadership made Ghana the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from Britain.
