As I'm thinking a lot lately about the decline in trust in the nonprofit sector and how less households are giving, I keep coming back to the strength in this storm lying with our people. Our ability to have impact is dependent on attracting, developing, supporting and retaining passionate individuals who understand the power of nonprofits to strengthen our community. But too many organizations don't prioritize their workforce. To move forward, it’s time for an honest conversation to create action plans for fair compensation, truly invest and develop staff, and a culture of innovation. I'm currently working with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties and they have a culture code made up of 5 pithy sayings. But they don't just say them - they live them and practice them every day. As a result, their tenure is impressive, people truly believe in the mission and organization and their impact continues to grow. In today's environment these aren't just ideals - they're necessities. And they aren't just "people" issues, it affects nonprofit finances, business models, impact and sustainability. The time is now to move beyond talking about it and begin modeling a new way to operate. It can be done - and the reward is worth the effort.
