SPECTRUM Project brings together expertise from leading research platforms to develop next-generation hybrid solar technologies. One of these platforms is Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, a pioneer in solar energy research for over 40 years. FISE plays a key role in optimizing photovoltaic components for our innovative absorbers. A major step forward is the use of Module-TEC, Fraunhofer ISE’s newly expanded Technology Evaluation Center. The EU-funded SPECTRUM project aims to develop and validate a groundbreaking solar concentrating collector that fully harnesses the solar spectrum. This collector will convert solar radiation into solar heat, green hydrogen, and solar electricity, while also providing industrial wastewater treatment. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement for Project No 101172891. Project Progress ?? The SPECTRUM project goes beyond conventional solar energy by fully optimising the solar spectrum to generate multiple clean energy solutions while supporting industrial wastewater treatment. ?? How do we transform a scientific breakthrough into a real-world energy solution? That’s what WP3 in the SPECTRUM project is all about! This is what is happening in WP3: ?? T3.1 - Refining Prototype Designs Every detail, from materials to integration, will be optimised to meet industrial and environmental standards. ?? T3.2 - Building the Prototypes The SPECTRUM-LT and SPECTRUM-HT collectors will be manufactured at @HiG and @LNEG, integrating next-generation solar technologies ?? T3.3 – Defining Performance Testing Protocols: Since no standard methodology exists for hybrid collectors that combine heat, electricity, and hydrogen, WP3 will develop new experimental protocols to ensure accurate and comparable results. ?? T3.4 – Outdoor Experimental Testing: Prototypes will undergo rigorous real-world testing at LNEG and CIEMAT. By bridging scientific research and industrial application, WP3 ensures that SPECTRUM is not just an idea - it’s an energy revolution. A recent paper by Sze & Wei (2025) explores photovoltaic-thermal collectors, using spectrum division and solar concentration to enhance energy conversion. By efficiently separating visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light, their system optimizes both electricity and heat generation—an approach that aligns with SPECTRUM’s goals.
