?? Project Highlight: Hazardous Building Materials Surveys at Fire Department Facilities ??? SPC was tasked with conducting hazardous building materials surveys at multiple Fire Department facilities. These surveys aimed to identify asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint before planned renovations or demolition. What We Did: ?? Conducted limited asbestos containing materials and lead-based paint surveys ?? Identified hazardous materials for removal or special handling ?? Ensured compliance with USEPA, NESHAP, and OSHA regulations Our Approach: We performed thorough inspections to meet USEPA requirements for asbestos under 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart M, and NESHAP standards for demolition/renovation. Lead surveys followed OSHA guidelines to ensure safety at each site. Based on the findings of the hazardous materials surveys, renovation activities were then performed to ensure the health and safety of workers, as well as the occupants and visitors of the Fire Department facilities. Specialty Consulting, Inc. was selected to provide environmental consulting services for in-place abandonment of a 20,000-gallon diesel fuel Underground Storage Tank (UST) at a former power generating station in Illinois. What We Did: ?? Conducted a limited Phase II Environmental Site Assessment. ?? Determined if a release from the UST system had occurred. ?? Consulted with our client on reporting of a release to the appropriate state agency. ?? Performed Illinois EPA required reporting. ?? Submitted for client reimbursement of expenses from the Illinois Leaking Underground Storage Tank Fund. ? Our Approach: SPC followed Illinois EPA standards for UST abandonment and utilized TACO Tier 1 standards to ensure environmental compliance during the site investigation, abandonment, and reporting. Specialty Consulting, Inc. was retained to assess and recommend repairs for a property in Chicago, IL, focusing on the fa?ade, roof, and window conditions. Cost Estimation Our Approach: This full restoration project involved a detailed examination of key areas, including the building's fa?ade, roof, and windows. We developed a tailored repair program addressing the structure’s immediate needs and future durability. Our approach encompassed project conceptualization, where we outlined the project’s scope and strategy, as well as construction document preparation to guide all stages of work. Spotlight on Leadership: Meet Nicholas Peneff With a background in public health policy focused on healthy schools and healthy homes, Nicholas has dedicated his career to promoting “Health in All Policy” across various sectors. His extensive experience spans academia, municipal public health, private sector risk management, and federal research and grant programs in environmental and occupational health. Nicholas began his career as a laboratory chemist for a health department, using his technical background to support social justice and sustainability efforts in the emerging “green” economy. Over four decades, he has advanced community action, local infrastructure development, and pioneering EPA and HUD initiatives. Dedicated to community service, Nicholas has volunteered with The Salvation Army, environmental justice groups, local unions, school councils, and non-profit workforce organizations. He has also mentored interns from his alma mater and contributes to the broader community through board roles at Tapestry 360 Community Health Clinics and the International Children’s Media Center.
