Changing Attitudes. Changing Lives.
关于我们
Mission To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. History The global Special Olympics movement started on July 20, 1968, when the first International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois, USA. However the concept of Special Olympics was thought of much earlier, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities at her home in 1962. Since 1974, when Special Olympics Tennessee (SOTN) became registered as 501(c) (3) non-for-profit organizations, has continued to achieve the original mission. Goals Special Olympics Tennessee is a program that through quality sports training and competition improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they encounter. SOTN strives to empower the people we serve by helping them to realize their full potential and develop skills through year-round sports training and competition.

This week, LaFollette Middle School of Campbell County Public Schools hosted an “Inclusion Matters” basketball game as a part of Spread The Word Day. Throughout the week, the school principal spoke about inclusion over the intercom. Then, every student wrote a paragraph about what inclusion means to them. To finish the week, students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities played in a Unified basketball game, with the whole school cheering them on. Thank you to April Lowe for organizing such a great event. SOTN board member and Area Director Brandon J. of Campbell, Morgan, and Scott Counties was in attendance to support the event. #Inclusion #SpreadTheWord #SpecialOlympics

During the Bid Evaluation Committee's site visit for our 2030 Special Olympics USA Games bid, our friends at the Ryman Auditorium hosted a songwriters' round featuring writers connected to our incredible community with athletes, community leaders, Special Olympics Board Members and more in attendance. Special Olympics Tennessee athletes Daniel and Joseph Harrison performed two songs for us to begin the evening. What a Ryman debut for them! Thank you to Liz Rose, Sean McConnell, Barry Dean and Phil Barton for sharing your music and stories during this fantastic event to support our bid. #MusicCity #Nashville #Songwriters #Ryman #SpecialOlympics
