We were thrilled to share this Fall Tournament weekend with these inspiring youth leaders!
Officially wrapped up the 2024 Youth Leadership Experience at Fall Tournament! ?? Had the pleasure of bringing together 55 high school and college youth leaders with and without intellectual disabilities and 8 educators to serve Special Olympics North Carolina athletes throughout the weekend. To top it all off, I received the sweetest thank you card that reaffirms my “why.” ?? Always impressed by the students who are so heavily involved at their Unified Champion Schools - we are in good hands with them at the helm.

On Tuesday, Smithfield-Selma High School demonstrated exactly why they were renewed this year as a national banner school. The Unified club, consisting of students with and without disabilities, spent several months (beginning over the summer) planning a Johnston County Youth Summit for middle and high schools in their area. Their vision came to fruition this week and the students executed an incredible event. Students and educators spent the day actively engaged with our 3 components: Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership and Whole School Engagement. They learned from each other and built new friendships and connections! I loved getting a front row seat as these schools perfectly exemplified meaningful inclusion.#unifiedgeneration

According to the CDC,?1 in 6 people with disabilities are diagnosed with diabetes, compared to 1 in 14 without disabilities. A recent study by Meghann Lloyd, PhD of Ontario Tech University highlights how Special Olympics is addressing this disparity. Athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who participate in Special Olympics see a 15% reduction?in diabetes rates compared to those who don’t.
